It takes more than luck to avoid a DUI

March 15, 2013 — Motorists are reminded not to rely on luck when it comes to avoiding an arrest for driving under the influence this St. Patrick’s Day. The California Highway Patrol is encouraging celebrants to plan a safe way home and designate a non-drinking driver before the festivities begin.

Last year on St. Patrick’s Day, the California Highway Patrol made more than 300 arrests statewide for driving under the influence, according to the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System. Additionally, provisional figures from the records system for that day indicate at least three people were killed in California in alcohol-involved collisions.

Local author teaches at writers’ workshop in Alturas

March 14, 2013 — Do you crave an adventure to write about? Do you have a story to tell, but can’t get started? Writers of all abilities are invited to attend the Write Now Workshop held April 11-14 at the Niles Hotel in Alturas, Calif.

Guiding writers to a better way of telling a story are two well-known authors of memoir and creative nonfiction:

Joelle Fraser, of Susanville, author of two memoirs including the recently released “The Forest House” (Counterpoint Press), will conduct a morning session on memoir writing, and hold a book launch and signing party. Following in the footsteps of her father who authored a novel, Fraser is currently working on her first piece of fiction.
