Students may get music class soon

Thursday, July 2, 2015 — A music program may soon be available to Susanville School District students.
    During the Wednesday, June 24 Susanville School District Board of Trustees meeting, the board approved a contract with Lassen Union High School District for music instruction services for the 2015/2016 school year.
    According to the unanimously approved agreement for services, the service will start July 1 and be in effect until June 30, 2016 and will be taught by certificated employee Carlin Hagen.

Hagen will spend one period of the day with Susanville School District students.

Marijuana legalization initiative can begin collecting signatures

Thursday, July 2, 2015 — While the city of Susanville continues to work on an ordinance to regulate the cultivation of medical marijuana within the city limits, the California secretary of state announced an initiative to legalize marijuana may begin collecting signatures to qualify for the November 2016 ballot.
    The initiative would prohibit the state legislature from enacting marijuana laws, nullify local regulations and exempt medical marijuana collectives from licensing and local zoning regulations.

Plumas National Forest restrictions are in effect June 30

Thursday, July 2, 2015 — Fire restrictions will be effective soon within the Plumas National Forest (public land) according to Chris French, acting Forest supervisor.
    “We’ve quickly transitioned into warmer and dryer weather; fire season is here,” he said.
    No open fires, campfires or charcoal fires will be allowed outside of designated areas even with a valid California Campfire Permit.

Fire department suspends burn permits

Wednesday, July 1, 2015 — As of July 1, the Susanville Fire Department will be suspending all burning in the city. Burning will resume Nov. 1 when the weather allows to lift the suspension.
    According to a press release from the fire department, looking at the forecast for the upcoming summer and given all variables, extreme conditions exist.
    Presently there exists in Susanville and surrounding areas, low humidity and extreme dry conditions that also exist throughout the region, and the necessity to preserve the public health, safety and welfare of the city of Susanville by taking all necessary measures for the prevention of fires.

Chester author announces two county book tour

Wednesday, July 1, 2015 — Chester-raised author Jesse Goolsby is coming home — for a day or two, at least. His ongoing book tour includes stops in Susanville and Chester to promote his debut novel, “I’d Walk With My Friends If I Could Find Them.”
    The book was officially released June 2. Goolsby’s local appearances are scheduled for 1 p.m. July 2 at Margie’s Book Nook in Susanville and at 4 p.m. July 3 at Books and Beyond in Chester.
    Also an Air Force officer, Goolsby has an English degree from the United States Air Force Academy and a master’s degree in English and creative writing from the University of Tennessee.
