Fire causes Prop. 65 notice

Sunday, Aug. 23, 2015 — On Aug. 10, emergency resources responded to a reported garage fire at 710-140 Lake Ave., in Leavitt Lake. The fire quickly spread to adjacent structures which included a 150-gallon kerosene tank.
    The intensity of the fire compromised a portion of the tank resulting in the release of about 20 gallons of kerosene. The spill was confined to the dirt area directly adjacent to the tank.
Fire personnel used absorbent pads to collect the standing pools of kerosene, which were then collected for proper disposal.

College features Child Development Center

Sunday, Aug. 23, 2015 — The Lassen Community College superintendent/ president featured the Child Development Center as the program of the month.
    During the Tuesday, Aug. 11 board of trustees meeting, superintendent/president Dr. Marlon Hall featured the center during his president’s report and child development administrative assistant Renee McAndrews shared about the program.
    The Child Development Center, which was constructed in 2001, serves community families with children ages 6 weeks to 5 years old.

Museum racks added with donated funding

Sunday, Aug. 23, 2015 — The board of directors for Westwood Museum Inc. voted to purchase a display rack in memory of Dick Mason with the donations  given by friends. A small brass plaque will be attached indicating the piece was donated in his memory.
    The decision was made at the Tuesday, Aug. 11, meeting of the board with his widow, Carol, present. In addition, the “Dick Mason Family” will be added to the lifetime membership plaque that hangs in the museum.
    Paula Dante, board treasurer, reported on the internal control checklist for nonprofits she had several other board members complete. The purpose of the list is to ensure a nonprofit has appropriate controls for sound money management.

Rising firefighting costs cause alarm

Saturday, Aug. 22, 2015 — For the first time in its 110-year history, the Forest Service, part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is spending more than 50 percent of its budget to suppress the nation’s wildfires. A new report released recently by the Forest Service estimates that within a decade, the agency will spend more than two-thirds of its budget to battle ever-increasing fires, while mission-critical programs that can help prevent fires in the first place such as forest restoration and watershed and landscape management will continue to suffer. Meanwhile, the report notes, these catastrophic blazes are projected to burn twice as many acres by 2050.

Constitutional expert scheduled to speak at Jensen Hall in Susanville

Saturday, Aug. 22, 2015 — The Lassen Tea Party Patriots host a free lecture by KrisAnne Hall — an author, radio talk show host, attorney, former prosecutor and expert on the Constitution —  from 5 to 9 p.m. Nov. 10 at Jensen Hall.
    According to the Northern California Tea Party Coalition’s website, Hall “was fired for teaching the Constitution to Tea Party groups. She would not sacrifice liberty for a paycheck. She now travels around the country teaching the Constitution and the history that gave us our founding documents. She’s a disabled U.S. Army veteran, a Russian linguist, a mother and a pastor’s wife and a patriot …
