Grant funds fire safe display

Monday, April 20, 2015 — The Lassen County Fire Safe Council will have a new tool for spreading information regarding fire safety.

Recently, the local council was awarded a $500 grant to participate in the Wildfire Community Preparedness Day on May 2. The National Fire Protections Association, in conjunction with State Farm, awarded 65 projects, according to a press release. There were more than 300 entries that spanned 37 states.

According to Education Director Dan Douglas, the education committee had been working on receiving the grant for an ember house, which is an interactive display.

Baxter assumes Aurora Network director’s role

Monday, April 20, 2015 — Shelly Baxter is looking forward to her new role as the executive director of the Lassen Aurora Network; but she knows she has big shoes to fill.

“Colleen Thorn has done a wonderful job starting and continuing the growth of the Lassen Aurora Network, and I look forward to continuing her good work,” said Baxter.

Baxter comes to Aurora with 20 years of program management experience. She was previously the program supervisor at the Lassen College Child Development Center. This is where she says she “learned the ins and outs of grant writing, budgeting and staffing oversight.”

Hospital lifts visitor restrictions

Sunday, April 19, 2015 — As the flu and cold season winds down, Banner Health, one of the nation's largest health care providers, has lifted visitor restrictions at all of its facilities. Restrictions for the 2014-2015 cold and flu season were implemented last Oct. 1; a little earlier than expected because of the outbreak of Enterovirus D68 across the nation.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than half a million people nationwide have been tested for flu viruses since Sept. 28, 2014, with 112,246 positive cases.

Legislators hold meeting

Sunday, April 19, 2015 —Nearly 100 local residents attended a town hall meeting with state legislators Friday, March 27 at Susanville’s Masonic Temple. Assemblyman Brian Dahle and state Senator Ted Gaines sponsored the event to meet with their constituents and discuss local and state issues, including their support of water bills, efforts to repeal the state gas tax and their frustration with the one-size-fits-all approach to government in Sacramento.

Local nonprofit Lassen D.E.N. looks for volunteers, donations

Saturday, April 18, 2015 — Local community nonprofit Lassen D.E.N., Devoted to Excellence in Neighborhoods, Inc., is progressing along with fundraising and activity planning.

The annual yard sale fundraiser is slated to take place May 15 and 16 in conjunction with the Skyline Storage yard sale, according to board president Emily Strength.

However, the organization is looking for donations of clean, unbroken items for the event. Interested donors can call or text 310-0634 or 249-2349, to set up a time to drop off donations at the Skyline Storage unit at 702-900 Johnstonville Road.
