Depot employee allegedly smuggles military equipment

April 9, 2013 — A civilian employee at Sierra Army Depot has been charged with the alleged theft of sophisticated military equipment recently returned from Afghanistan and Iraq.

According to court documents, Devon Gregory Biggs Jr. 36, is accused of trying to smuggle nearly $85,000 worth of equipment from SIAD in Herlong.

April 9, 2013 — A former Susanville resident stood beside Washington Governor Jay Inslee as he signed a bill designating March 30 each year as ‘Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans’ to honor Vietnam veterans in the state of Washington.

  

County files demurrer in Stone case

April 9, 2013 — Kathleen Williams, the Sacramento-based attorney representing Lassen County in the case of Tom Stone, the former county administrative officer who alleges the county wrongly terminated him in 2011, filed a notice of demurrer to plaintiff’s complaint and a lengthy memorandum of points and authorities in support in Lassen County Superior Court on March 18.

Should Stone prevail in the lawsuit, he asks the court to award him at least $1 million in damages and costs.

  

Court date set for recall writ

April 9, 2013 — Tom Hammond, the south county proponent seeking to force the Lassen County Clerk to move forward with the effort to recall Lassen County District 5 Supervisor Jack Hanson, will finally have his day in court.

“This very important dispute is the exact type of matter our founders considered when setting up our government,” wrote Stephen King, Hammond’s attorney. “We have three co-equal branches of government. Petitioner is asking the judicial branch to limit the power of the executive branch to disenfranchise its citizens. It’s as simple as that.”

  

Missing Herlong inmate sought

Monday, April 8 — Federal prison officials seek an inmate who walked away from a minimum-security camp in Herlong on Friday, April 5.

Inmate Roderick Earl Vanga, of Seattle, Wash., was discovered missing during a routine check Friday. He is 5 feet, 11 inches tall, weighs 155 pounds, and has black hair and brown eyes. He is serving an 84-month sentence for conspiracy to import N-Bezylpiperazine (BZP).
