Put immunization on your back-to-school checklist

Monday, Aug. 25, 2014 — With the new school year about to begin, Dr. Ron Chapman, director of the California Department of Public Health and state health officer, is encouraging parents to make sure their childrens’ vaccinations are up to date before classes start.

“Currently, California’s whooping cough (pertussis) epidemic continues to be a threat," said Chapman. "As families make plans for heading back to school, they should also make sure their children all have their immunizations required for child care or school. That includes an adolescent whooping cough booster (Tdap) for students entering seventh grade."

Banner Lassen Medical Center presents second annual wellness celebration

Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014 — Banner Lassen Medical Center and the Banner Lassen Medical Center Foundation invite the public to a low-cost family fun and fitness event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23 at the Lassen County Fairgrounds, 195 Russell Ave.

Organizers plan to have various activities, including professional jump rope and hula-hoop lessons, face painting, tug of war and nine-hole Frisbee golf. There will be a “Pirate Mania” section for children with three different activity stations. In addition, Bounce City will offer a giant waterslide, obstacle course and jumbo bounce house. Don’t forget your swimsuits.

Kids Fest generates several thousand dollars for local teen

Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014— The Lassen County community is known to step up and rally around those in need and Susanville Supermarket IGA’s annual Kids Fest is proof of that sentiment.

City ponders regulating medical marijuana cultivation

Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014 — Medical marijuana growers within the city of Susanville will soon have to comply with a new city ordinance.

At its Wednesday, Aug. 6 meeting, the Susanville City Council introduced and waived the first reading of a new city ordinance regulating where medical marijuana can be grown within the city limits. Violation of the ordinance will be a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not more than $1,000 and imprisonment not to exceed one year.

Janesville teen spends time in Australia

Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014 — From snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef to touring the Sydney Opera House, one Janesville teenager got to participate in an adventure-filled trip to Australia this summer.

“It was amazing. So much fun, we got to do so many new things and meeting new people. It was a great learning experience, and I would recommend anyone who can, do this trip,” said eighth-grader Gracie Claypool who was selected to represent Lassen County as a People-to-People Ambassador.

She traveled with a group of 42 of her peers and their action-packed itinerary included attending school with the students, visiting a working cattle station, rappelling off a 90-foot cliff, visiting the Capricorn Caves traveling through the rain forest on the Skyrail Rain Forest Cableway.
