LCC takes of three from Shasta
The guys are definitely jelling and are playing better as the season rolls along, but Lassen College's baseball team most likely will not win the Golden Valley Conference this year. The Cougars (14-17-2) improved to 9-7 in conference play last weekend, taking two of three games from Shasta College (8-10 in the GVC).
Lassen won 8-7 on Friday and split Saturday's doubleheader, dropping the first game 5-4 and winning the finale 9-6.
Feather River stands in the way. The Golden Eagles entered last weekend with a 4-1/2 game lead over the Cougars. Lassen needs to maintain its second-place standings to make the postseason for the 16th straight year.
On Friday, Lassen's Eric Newman started off his monster weekend with three hits and a double. David Bates was 2-for-5 with a home run. The Cougars scored six times in the fourth inning.
In the opening game of the doubleheader, Newman was 2-for-5 and Jamie Watts went 2-for-3.
Justin Newman's sacrifice fly provided the go-ahead run in Saturday's second game, scoring Eric Newman, who later pounded a two-run homer.
