Reno man killed in head-on collision

Monday, March 16 — A Reno man lost his life after colliding head-on with a semi-truck on Sunday, March 15.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident occurred at approximately 5:40 a.m. on Highway 395, north of Pozzolan Road.

The victim, who the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office identified as Clyde Cordova, was traveling in a 2001 Chevrolet 2500 HD pickup truck in the southbound lane at an unknown speed.

According to the press release, Jeffrey Smith was driving a 2011 Freightliner pulling a 2014 Hyundai Trailer at approximately 57 miles per hour in the northbound lane.

As Smith crested a hill, he observed Cordova traveling in a southerly direction. As he got closer, he realized the pickup was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of traffic.

Smith attempted to brake to avoid a collision but was unable to and struck the vehicle head-on. The impact with the Chevrolet caused Cordova’s fatal injuries.

After colliding with the Chevrolet, the freightliner continued in a northwesterly direction before overturning on a dirt embankment.

Smith sustained minor injuries.

The collision remains under investigation.
