Veterans lead students in flag salute at Fletcher Walker Elementary
When Istrice asked if any other veterans were present, Jack Forester, the sixth-grade teacher, said he had served in the United States Coast Guard.
“If you know a veteran say thank you,” Istrice told the children, encouraging them to even make a short phone call to relatives who have served in the military yet don’t live nearby.
Veterans Day was first commemorated in the United States as Armistice Day by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919. It was made a legal holiday nationwide in 1938.
The holiday falls on Nov. 11, which is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended World War I.
In 1953 the citizens of Emporia, Kansas held a Veterans Day observance in place of Armistice Day and their congressman introduced legislation to change the name of the holiday. In 1954 the holiday was changed to Veterans Day.
Originally the purpose of Veterans Day was to honor American soldiers who had served in wars, however today all living veterans are honored.
