Illegal soliciting reported out in Janesville
Jackson said a woman called the Janesville Fire Department in the afternoon trying to confirm a phone call she had just received. The woman, a resident of Janesville, told the fire department someone had just called her asking to donate money to the Janesville Fire Department. She said the solicitor was a man calling himself Roy and that he was based out of Bakersfield, Calif. The man was convincing enough that the woman was in fact willing to donate the money to ‘Roy,” but because the situation still sounded somewhat suspicious, she figured to confirm the solicitation by calling the fire department directly.
Jackson received the call and told the woman that they weren’t soliciting money. She explained how she had just gotten off the phone with a man claiming to be with the department, and how he had tried to solicit money from her. This of course infuriated Jackson, who immediately called the sheriff’s department, who is still investigating the matter.
“This woman said the man sounded pretty convincing,” Jackson said. “We aren’t asking for any money, and some guy is trying to pull a scam in our name. It’s very upsetting.”
Jackson said the woman told the department the man even left a call back number, complete with voice message on the other line. She gave the number to Jackson, who in turn has given it to the police.
Jackson said he plans to get to the bottom of this whole mess, not only because it could tarnish the all-volunteer departments outstanding reputation, but because the solicitor, ‘Roy,’ may actually convince some people to part with their money.
Jackson was willing to submit the number to the Times, and if your number is xxx-xxx-xxxx, then it would seem you are in a great amount of trouble. Anyone willing to submit a complaint to the aforementioned illegal solicitor can reach him at he above number.
