California Higway Patrol plans heavy enforcement over Labor Day weekend
In addition to lives lost, 1,749 people were arrested statewide for driving under the influence. Officers in the Susanville area arrested three people for alleged DUIs.
As during each holiday weekend, the CHP is asking for the public’s help to reduce collisions and DUIs.
“If you drink, be responsible. The choice you make can affect you or others for a lifetime,” said Liband. “If you see someone driving who you suspect may be under the influence, call 911.”
To reinforce the importance of following the rules of the road and saving lives on the state’s roadway, CHP Commissioner Mike Brown will patrol along Interstate 5 from Woodland to San Diego during the Maximum Enforcement Period.
Ticket book in hand, Brown will cite or arrest drivers for any number of violations including speeding, not wearing seatbelts and driving under the influence.
As part of a three-state campaign, patrols officers in Oregon and Washington will also be out in full force. The campaign is called, “Stay Alive on I-5.”
“Commissioner Brown will be in good company over the holiday weekend,” said Liband. “He will be joined by up to 80 percent of all uniformed personnel from 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 31 through midnight on Monday, Sept. 3.
The Labor Day MEP is also an Operation Combined Accident Reduction Effort holiday. Operation CARE is a joint program of the nation’s highway patrols, which places special safety emphasis on interstate highways during holiday periods. CARE highways in California include interstates 80, 40 and 15 from the San Bernardino to the Nevada border and I-5 from Bakersfield to the Oregon line.
