Alice Coghlan Armijo, born Jan. 8, 1951, died Jan. 14, 2008.
She was born in Van Nuys, Calif. but eventually settled in Susanville, California, working as a law librarian at the Calif. Correctional Center.
Alice is survived by her husband, Joseph H. Armijo; daughter, Aurora; two sons, Jonathan and Joel; mother, Martha Coghlan; brothers, John and Daniel Coghlan; sisters, Anne Coghlan and Deirdre Coghlan-Yap; and her beloved cat, Stella; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceeded in death by her father, John J. Coghlan and her brother, James L. Coghlan.
A memorial service was held at Webb-Sanders Funeral Home, located at 163 S. Mirage Ave., Lindsay, Calif. at 12 noon on January 24.

CATHERINE HELEN BURLINGAME
Catherine Helen Burlingame was born Aug. 27, 1926 and died Jan. 22, 2008 following a short but valiant battle with cancer.
A longtime Lake Almanor resident, Burlingame peacefully passed from this life while her daughter, who so lovingly cared for her during her final days, and her sister were at her side.
Born 81 years ago in Martinez, Calif., to the late Wallace and Esther (MacDonald) Maurer, she was raised and educated in the San Francisco East Bay communities of Alameda and San Leandro. Burlingame went on to attend San Francisco State University for two years.
Following college, Burlingame established a long and fulfilling career with RCA Global Communications as a bookkeeper, retiring in 1990 after 35 years of dedicated employment.
In the early 50's, through friends, she was introduced to a handsome young man named Wesley Burlingame. As their love for one another blossomed, they were united in matrimony at the First Congregational Church of Alameda, Calif., two days before Christmas in 1954. The newlyweds eventually settled in San Lorenzo, Calif. in 1960, residing there until retirement in 1990. In 1974, the couple purchased property in the Hamilton Branch area of Lake Almanor and built a summer residence that in 1990 became their fulltime home.
Burlingame had a loving and caring nature about her. She was always there to lend a hand to those in need and had driven countless miles transporting the elderly, shut-ins and disabled throughout the area. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star for close to 50 years, holding dual memberships with Sincerity Chapter # 53 of Greenville, Calif. and the Oakleaf Chapter of Alameda. She is a past Worthy High Priestess of the Alchor White Shrine of Jerusalem, held dual memberships with the Daughters of the Nile Nefru-Ari Chapter of Oakland, Calif. and Menzaleh Chapter of Sacramento, Calif. A longtime member of the Hamilton Branch Firebelles, she served as their leader many times over. Following the passing of her husband in 1997, she became a volunteer with Sierra Hospice, serving as the coordinator for the Circle of Weavers, a local bereavement group of the Lake Almanor basin. Burlingame enjoyed sewing, working with crafts, traveling and gardening.
In passing, Burlingame leaves her daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Joe Marlow of Hamilton Branch, Calif.; her sister and brother-in-law, Clara and Stanley Arnold of Schaumburg, Ill.; her precious grandchildren, Kristina and Karen Harvey; 11 great-grandchildren, including her special great-grandchild Ashley Harvey and numerous nieces and nephews.
She joins in her eternal home her loving husband of 43 years, Wesley.
A celebration of Burlingame's life will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008, at the Chester Lake Almanor Elks Lodge. Inurnment will take place in the Chester District Cemetery alongside her late husband. JOSEPH “JOE” SLAPNIK
Joe passed away peacefully on Dec. 29, 2007, with his loving family and friends at his bedside at his daughter’s home in Vina, Calif. Joe was 88 years old and the last surviving sibling of 11 children born in Tracy, Mont. He was born on Sept. 16, 1919, to Joseph and Antonina Slapnik who where immigrants from Montnik and Trojanah, Slovenia.
When Joe was 19 years old, he came to Oakland, Calif. to work in a Payless Grocery Store where he learned the grocery and butchering trades. He served in the United States Army during WWII and in the late 40s, he and his wife Evelyn came to Greenville where he managed the Mosley and Grinke Grocery Store and Butcher Shop. Soon after, Evelyn (predeceased in 2002) opened a florist shop. Over the years, he worked in other butcher shops that included Boyd’s Market in Quincy, The Westwood Y in Westwood, Young’s Market in Chester, Idaho Grocery, Food Lane, Raley’s in Susanville, Raley’s in Reno and Raley’s in Chico.
In between butchering, Joe also worked as an operating engineer on the Central Valley water projects that included La Porte, Pit River, Lake Almanor, Oroville Dam and Beldon. Joe lived in Greenville for almost 50 years. He was one of the last old- timers that made work his life and was always working at something. He especially loved to cut firewood, and at Thanksgiving, just before his passing, he was still stacking his winter’s wood. In his retirement, Joe took the most pleasure in helping everyone on the ranch and being so much a part his grandchildren’s lives. They were the highlight of his life.
Joe will always be remembered for his devotion and love for his grandchildren, his hard work and honesty, and for his willingness to do anything for his friends. His daughter Crystal Leininger, his two grandchildren, Amber and Grant Leininger, and several nieces and nephews in Seattle, WA survive him. He will be greatly missed by his family, extended family and friends.
His family would like to offer a special thank you to Butte Home Health Care-Hospice and his caregivers Barbara Williams and Kathy Francis for their loving care to Joe and his family.
Services will be held in Greenville, Calif., at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008.

PHILEMON OSWALD TRAVIS
Former Susanville resident and longtime businessman Phil Travis passed away on Dec. 21 in Redlands, Calif., from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. Philemon Oswald Travis was born on March 25, 1921 to John and Hattie Hansen Travis in Great Falls, Mont. He was raised on a ranch in Sun River, Mont., and graduated from Simms High School in 1938.
After completing a meat-cutting apprenticeship in Great Falls, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during WWII in the 38th Naval Construction Battalion in the Pacific from the Aleutian Islands to Tokyo.
He settled in Susanville, Calif., and in 1950 established Travis-Miles Meats with the late Herald Miles. The business operated until both men retired in 1980. He moved to Red Bluff in 1988 and resided there until relocating to Redlands in 2006.
Over the years, Travis excelled at bowling, golf, and other sports in the community. He was a member of the Susanville Elks Lodge and a past member of Emerson Lake Golf Club.
He is survived by his wife Virginia, of Redlands; daughter Linda Daulby, of Phoenix, Ariz.; stepdaughters Gayle Davis, of Redlands, and Sandra Alexander, of Redding; stepson Gary Avise, of Indio; nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
He is preceded in death by his wife Elese Burr Travis.
Memorial services were held on Jan. 21 and interment with military honors will be at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, Calif. Phil Travis will be remembered by those who knew him for his unfailing integrity, kindness and generosity. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or BPOE children’s charities. William Delmar Knight, 80, died on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2008, in Lake Forest, Calif.
He was born on Jan. 12, 1928, in Williamsport, Penn.
He is survived by his son John Knight; daughters Patricia Knight, Donna Daily and Carmen Hernandez; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will he held later this spring.

Wanda R. Lee, 75, died Jan. 21, 2008, at the Countryvilla Riverview in Susanville, Calif. She was born Aug. 17, 1932 in Oklahoma.
She is survived by her sons Allen Lee and Danny Lee; daughters Donna Lee, Laverna Terrill, Jessie Bostwick, Mary Lee; eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
