May 13, 2008 — Changes are coming to the Susanville School District for the 2008-2009 school year after the SSD Board of Trustees unanimously decided to create three schools on two campuses. The first day of school is set for Monday, Aug. 25. All kindergarten through third- grade classes will be held at McKinley School at 2005 Fourth St. The telephone number is 257-5161.

All students in the fourth through sixth grades will be at Meadow View School at 1200 Paiute Lane. The telephone number is 257-3000.

Diamond View School, which is for students in the seventh and eighth-grades will be held as a separate school on the Meadow View School campus. The phone number is 257-5144.

Parents who have children attending either Meadow View or McKinley School do not need to do anything. Their child’s records will be transferred to the correct school and will be on the correct class lists next school year. ‘

For parents who are enrolling a kindergarten student for next school year, the kindergarten open house will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 13 in the McKinley School cafeteria.

Registration paper work is available at McKinley School. Parents must bring a copy of their child’s immunizations, birth certificate, and last physical exam to the open house.

Children entering kindergarten must be 5 years old on or before Tuesday, Dec. 2.

On March 20, the Susanville Fire Department declared the Diamond View campus was unsafe for students, faculty and staff.

According to a press release from the SSD, Superintendent Gary McIntire said problems in the main school buildings began with improvements to the school made in the 1970s.

Those improvements and other work in the buildings do not comply with current building standards for public schools. Corrections to the structural deficiencies will require removal of the interior walls as well as other major modifications to comply with all current codes.

The district made some temporary modifications to the campus to allow the school to operate through the end of this school year, and the trustees had to decide what to do with the students for the next two or three years while it tries to figure out a way to remodel or rebuild Susanville’s only middle school.

During a special meeting on Thursday, April 17, McIntire proposed five possible alternatives; the board followed his recommendation and approved the least costly alternative.

Parents and staff members were in attendance at the special meeting and were able to voice their support or opposition for the changes.
