On duty deputy hits pedestrian

Dec. 9, 2008 — At 4:25 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 21, on-duty Lassen County Sheriff’s deputy Alan Sobol hit Susanville resident Annette Sue Ann while driving a Lassen County Sheriff’s marked 2007 Dodge Durango. According to a press release from the California Highway Patrol, Ann, 59, fell to the ground after being hit and was transported to Banner Lassen Medical Center for treatment of her injuries.

The press release said Sobol, 28, was stopped at the intersection of Park and Main streets, facing south.

Ann, who was on foot, stopped outside the south crosswalk of Main and Park streets facing north. Noticing a break in traffic, Ann stepped into the crosswalk and began to walk in a northerly direction.

Sobol also noticed a break in traffic and turned left onto Main Street and began to travel east. Sobol said he suddenly saw Ann crossing the street directly in front of his Durango.

Sobol said he applied his brakes but was not able to stop before striking Ann with the front end of the Dodge.

Lassen County Sheriff Commander Dean Growdon said he was unable to comment on the situation. He said the CHP is doing the investigation and the Sheriff’s Office is waiting for a report.
