ROTARY SPEECH CONTEST   

The Susanville Rotary and Susanville Sunrise Rotary clubs have joined together this year to host a speech contest for high school students. The contest will be held March 4 this year. There are cash prizes for first — through fourth — places locally. The winner of the district wins $1000. Now is the time to prepare those speeches. See the ad in todays paper for more information.

CRAB FEED TICKETS NOW ON SALE   

The Susanville Elks Crab Feed is scheduled for Feb. 19 and 20 this year. Tickets are now on sale at Century 21 in Susanville until sold out.  So hurry in to get yours today. Doors will open at 6 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m.

THE SOCIAL EVENT OF THE YEAR   

The Lassen County Cattlemen and Cattlewomen are hosting their 22nd annual “A Taste of Beef, A Sip of Wine,” on Friday, Feb. 5.  The event will be held at the Susanville Elks Lodge from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale at the Chamber of Commerce, The Pardner, The Fair Office, and Every Bloomin’ Thing.  
    The event attracts more than 400-500 attendees each year and the proceeds from the wine tasting directly help the CattleWomen’s effort to support local scholarships, youth activities and Agriculture in the Classroom.

EDWARD JONES RANKED NO. 2 BY FORTUNE MAGAZINE    

The financial-services firm Edward Jones ranked No. 2 on FORTUNE magazine's "100 Best Companies to Work For 2010" list in its 11th year on the prestigious list, according to two of the financial advisors in Lassen and Plumas County. Edward Jones also ranked No. 1 for large-sized companies. The full list and related stories appear in the February 8 issue of FORTUNE, available on newsstands Jan. 25 and currently at fortune.com/bestcompanies.   

Edward Jones' 11 FORTUNE rankings include top 10 finishes for eight years and consecutive No. 1 rankings in 2002 and 2003. This is the firm's second consecutive year in the No. 2 spot.   

In naming Edward Jones to the list, FORTUNE editors said: "The investment adviser weathered the recession without closing one of its 12,615 offices or laying off a single employee. Salaries were frozen, but profit sharing continued."
