Bonnie Jean Heller Streshly
Longtime Janesville resident Bonnie Jean Heller Streshly peacefully passed from this life, Feb. 28, 2010 at Life Care Center located in Reno, Nev., at the age of 83, following complications from a recent fall.
Born in Portola, Calif. to the late Arthur and Maude Bonham Heller on Aug. 12, 1926, her father ranched between Flanagan and Gerlach, Nev., when Bonnie was very young. She went to grammar school in Flanagan.
Her parents bought Fish Springs Ranch when Bonnie was ten years old. She grew up with cousin Jack Bonham who was a neighbor on the desert. Bonnie finished grammar school in Flanagan and attended high school for four years in Reno, Nev. She stayed with cousins in Reno during the week while attending high school. Her father picked her up and brought her back to the ranch every weekend. She said her father spoiled her rotten. She thought her father was the greatest.
After high school Bonnie came back to the ranch at Fish Springs, Nev., and worked with her father on the ranch. She drove a team pulling a buck rake, mowing meadow hay, and feeding hay in the winter. She buckarooed and did all the other ranch jobs.
Bonnie met Glen Streshly while he was working for her father on the ranch and married him in 1946. They worked at Horse Lake for Hansen Cattle Co. for three years after they were first married. Bonnie and Glen then moved to Susanville and Glen worked at the mill and Bonnie worked at a motel for another three years. After that they went to work for the Jenkins Ranch and stayed for 12 years until Bill Jenkins sold out.
They took care of the cattle staying at High Rock, Skeddaddle and summering at Grizzly Valley. They moved the cattle to High Rock in February to feed hay until spring turn out. Both Bonnie and Glen really enjoyed working for Jenkins Ranch and camping out. Bonnie especially loved the high desert.
Before Jenkins sold out, Bonnie and Glen bought 80 acres on Sears Road where they rebuilt an old barn, fixed fences and greatly improved the place. After working for Jenkins Ranch, Glen worked for Behr Ranch in Eagleville for three years. Bonnie worked in Susanville at Ellena’s motel for 7 years. Glen died in October of 1987.
Both Bonnie and Glen helped Don Dow buckaroo and after Glen’s death Bonnie continued to help the Dows for many years. Bonnie kept several horses and a small flock of sheep. She always gave the best of care to all of her animals. She lived independently in her own home until a recent fall.
A celebration of Bonnie's life took place graveside in the Janesville Cemetery on Friday, March 5. An opportunity to express your condolences along with signing the memorial guest register is available online at fehrmanmortuary.com.
