Marcella Elizabeth Laffin
Marcella Elizabeth (Kaber) Laffin, 80, of Turlock, Calif., passed away at her home at Paramount Court. Marcella “Dolly,” “Bubba” lived a full life involved as a cub scout leader, PTA officer, YLI officer, choir director, bowling secretary of several leagues, as well as entering many crafts in county fairs.
She was born in St. Louis, Mo., the family moved west to Lake County before setting in Orland, Calif. She lived in Susanville from 1948 to 1957 and Chester from 1957 to 1968.
Marcella is survived by brothers, Bob Overton (Irma), George Overton (Joanne) and Pete Overton, all of Orland, Calif., Pat Overton (Lorraine), of Forest Ranch, Calif. and Mike Overton (Diane), of Yuba City, Calif.; sister Theresa Day (Raymond), of Sacramento, Calif.; sister-in-law Mary Overton, of Colusa, Calif.; children Dave Kaber (Janice [deceased] and Cindy), of Susanville, Calif., Stan Kaber (Teresa), of Orland, Kathy Gritton (Wayne), of Reno, Nev. and Ruth Kaber, of Hilmar; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; step-children, Nancy Hollister (Jim), Dianne Villanueva (Les), Larry Laffin and John Laffin (Terry), of Turlock; and five step-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband Kenneth Kaber, of Hilmar; second husband Laurence Laffin, of Turlock; and brother Ted Overton, of Colusa.

Woodrow Langley
Woodrow “Woody” Langley passed away on Monday, March 29, with his family at his side.
Woody was born on Oct. 22, 1918 in Chelsea, Okla., to Charles and Emma Langley. The family moved to Susanville in 1924. Woody attended local schools and was a member of the Lassen High School class of 1936.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1941, serving in the 965th Division of the Third Army under Gerneral Patton during WWII. He was wounded twice during the European Theater of Operation and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster. He was honorably discharged with the rank of technical sergeant.
Following his military service, Woody returned to Susanville and his job at Fruit Growers Supply Company. He worked at a variety of jobs before becoming a certified lumber grader in 1950. He was employed there for 27 years before the mill ceased operation in 1963 and he accepted a position at the California Correctional Center. He retired from there, as a correctional sergeant in 1980.
Woody enjoyed sports. He played softball for the Story Club and the Merchants’ Team. He was a member of the Merchants’ Softball Team when they won the Northern Nevada State Championship. He was an avid golfer and fisherman. He loved to read and write and was a contributing author to “Small Moments in Time.”
Woody was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers Lonnie, Ed, Alva “Tanko,” Elmer, Herman and Lloyd; and three sisters, Josephine, Lois and June.
Woody is survived by Anita, his wife of 63 years; son Gary and wife Susie; one daughter Sheila McCullough and her husband Ken; two grandsons Kevin and Scott McCullough, all of Susanville; three granddaughters Kristin Long and her husband Ed, of Reno, Nev.; Becky Zamora and her husband Miguel, and Jenny Langley, also of Susanville; one great-grandson Ryan Long, of Reno; four great-granddaughters McKenna, Acelyn, Emma Lee, and Hallie McCullough; one sister Lorraine Yarbrough; one sister - in - law Lottie Langley, all of Susanville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside service will be held at Diamond Crest Cemetery at 11 a.m., on Friday, April 9. Donations in Woody’s memory may be made to the Lassen High Alumni Association, P.O. Box 471, Susanville, or the Honey Lake Hospice.
Robert Eugene Staggs
Robert Eugene “Rob” Staggs went to be with the Lord his Savior on Feb. 12, 2010. He was born Nov. 19, 1958, in Stockton, Calif. He was laid to rest Feb. 19, 2010, in Cherokee Memorial Cemetery in Lodi, Calif.
Rob attended Davis Elementary and Moranda Middle School. He graduated from Tokay High School in Lodi in 1976, where he was active in school sports. His favorite sport was baseball, where he enjoyed playing catcher.
Rob followed in his father’s footsteps and began his career in paint stores in the Stockton and Redding areas. When his parents moved to Susanville in 1979 he followed, and worked in the family paint store for the next 25 years. He loved working with wood, creating furniture and gifts, and used his skill to help build homes in the Susanville area. Later he went back to school, attaining computer technician, and computer networking degrees from Heald Business College in Stockton.
His childhood ambition to become a minister served him well as he found his faith again prior to his passing. Rob ministered to friends and acquaintances experiencing difficult times, helping them find a path to a better life. The deep, abiding faith that was kindled in him as a youth attending the Church of the Nazarene, and later the Honey Lake Assembly of God, sustained him in his final days.
Rob will be best remembered for his gentle, loving spirit. He enjoyed working with people, especially children. He is survived by his parents, Harold and Linnie Staggs, of Susanville, Calif.; daughters Melissa Staggs, of Greenville, Calif., and Alexa Staggs, of Chico, Calif.; son Zachary Staggs, of Chico; granddaughter Terra Spang , of Greenville; and four sisters, his twin sister Teresa Russell of Susanville, Cynthia Davis and Cari Neely also of Susanville and Sherry Staggs (deceased).
Fred Glenn Alway
Fred Glenn Alway, 95, died on Oct. 25, 2009, at Countryvilla Riverview.
He was born on Dec. 13, 1913, in Castella, Calif.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., on April 10 at Eagle Lake Village, 2001 Paul Bunyan Road, in Susanville, Calif. Inurnment will be at 11 a.m., on Saturday, April 10 at the Diamond Crest Cemetery.
Violet Anderson
Violet Anderson, 85, died on March 31, 2010, at CountryVilla Riverview.
She was born on June 23, 1942 in Susanville, Calif.
She is survived by her daughters Karen and Robert Jones, of Herlong, Calif.; Bonnie and Robert Hawes, of Washington; Janet and Barry Gilmore, of Susanville; 14 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
No services will be held at Violet’s request.

Barbara Caroline Beard, 87, died on March 18, 2010, at Banner Lassen Medical Center.
She is survived by her husband Tom; son William; daughter Mary Smith and two grandchildren.
At Barbara’s request no services will be held.
Gerald Deen Duke
Gerald Deen Duke, 74, died on April 1, 2010, at Banner Lassen Medical Center.
He was born on June 27, 1935, in Texas.
He is survived by his daughter Jeanette and Tom Monroe, of Crescent City, Calif.; Gerald W. Duke, of Susanville, Calif.; Henry Dean and Tammy L. Duke, of San Diego, Calif.; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Rellie Huhtala
Rellie Huhtala passed away March 17, 2010, at the age of 88.
She was born in Standard, La., on Dec. 6, 1921.
She was preceded in death by her husband Loren ”Bud” Huhtala.
She is survived by her son, Dennis Huhtala, of Cottonwood, Calif.; daughter Cindy Ellena, of Susanville; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A celebration of her life was held at Eagle Lake Village.
Martha Maedell Schoer
Martha Maedell Schoer died at Susanville's CountryVilla-Riverview, Monday, March 22, 2010.
She was born to Charles and Dora (Joyce) Barnes on May 3, 1908, in Roswell, N.M.
She is survived by her son and daughter - in - law; Ken and Nancy Kane, of Janesville, Calif.; sister Mary Violini, of Salinas, Calif., her grandchildren David, Thomas, Dianne and Janice; five great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband Charles who died on July 16, 1970.

Ethel Engelbrech
Ethel Engelbrech passed away at Renown Regional Medical Center on Tuesday, March 23, 2010.
Ethel is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Alfred Martinez; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ethel will be laid to rest at Diamond Crest Cemetery.
