If each county resident gave $500 for the relief of widows and orphans of World War I, Scott McArthur, of Standish, agreed to donate the same amount. It is not known how much money the relief drive generated.

Romie Lewis Riley, of Westwood, died in the Westwood Hospital of a gunshot wound to the stomach. Riley, a Western Pacific brakeman, was allegedly shot by co – worker Henry Holt. The motive for the shooting has not yet been determined. Sheriff’s officials believe an argument at work triggered the killing.

After a citywide municipal election, incumbents Ivor Lanigar, Charles Richardson, Fred Money and Mayor Dale Soule were re - elected to their seats on the Susanville City Council.

Ravendale School District Trustees Don Garate, Fred Mahlberg, Larry Morgan and Carol Siebe were served with recall papers at the April 1983 meeting.   

The recall effort was initiated in the midst of negotiations involving the expansion of the school building. The recall papers alleged the trustees “acted in a manner detrimental to the future progress and improvement of education.”

The Board of Supervisors signed a letter of intent with Catalyst Waste – to – Energy Corporation of New York. The Fortune 500 company expressed a desire to begin negotiations with bondholders in an attempt to buy the Lassen College co – generation facility.

Lassen High School Social Science Department Chair John McCann will travel and study in Japan this summer, all expenses paid.   

McCann was one of 24 educators to be selected on a competitive basis from applicants throughout the United States and Canada for a Keizai Koho Center Fellowship.

Kaylob Van Duyn, a Lassen High School senior and lifetime FFA member, was selected as the first Mr. LHS on Thursday, April 9 in the LHS student center.    

Van Duyn, who sang a country song for the talent portion of the Mr. LHS pageant, was also the recipient of the Most Talented award. Aric Jeffries, a senior at LHS, was voted Mr. Congeniality, an award given by the other contestants. Both received ski tickets to Northstar Ski Resort and day passes to Bianca Paris’ Tiki Spa.
