Shirley Ruth Jones

Community activist Shirley Ruth Jones passed from this life peacefully following a valiant battle with lung cancer, Thursday morning, April 22, 2010, at Mercy San Juan Medical Center located in Carmichael, Calif. Her loving family was at her side.

She was born Sept. 6, 1933, in Belgrade, Neb., to the late Hilbert and Agnes Newquist as one of nine children. She was raised and educated in Belgrade.

In 1950 she married fellow Nebraskan, Buck Plumbtree, in Belgrade and to this union one daughter and three sons were born. The family relocated west to the Sacramento area in 1962 where Shirley lovingly cared for her family and in 1968 began a 17-year career with J.C. Penney Co., rising to the position as office manager. Shirley’s union to Buck ended in divorce in 1979.

Following her divorce, while working for J.C. Penney she met a handsome young electrician named Tom Jones whom she made sure that his invoices were always on the top of the stack to be paid. As their love for one another matured they were united in matrimony in Reno, Nev., on March 10, 1989.

Shirley was a longtime dedicated member of the Theta Nu Chapter #2801 of the EPSILON Sigma Alpha International Sorority. She was honored many times over for her dedication to the sorority and served her chapter as President in 1992.

Shirley and Tom retired to the Northeastern California community of Lake Almanor in 1993 later to become snowbirds and wintering in Yuma, Ariz.

Shirley quickly became involved in her community where the soft spot in her heart for those less fortunate became her passion. As a member of the Chimney Fund she and her sorority sisters were instrumental in the organization of Chuck’s Railroad Room’s Chili Feed to help those in need. She was always at her husband’s side supporting him in his endeavors with the Westwood Rotary and was never heard to say no when asked to help out in the community.

In passing Shirley leaves her loving husband with whom she just celebrated her 21st wedding anniversary with, Tom, of Lake Almanor, Calif.; sons, Rick Plumbtree and wife Amy, of Rancho Murieta, Calif., Jay Plumbtree, of Sacramento, and Randy Plumbtree, of Petaluma; daughter, Lea Obermire and husband Michael, of Rocklin, Calif.; stepson, Michael Jones and wife Kim, of Auburn, Calif.; stepdaughter, Jacqueline England, of Roseville, Calif.; brothers, Donald Newquist of Yuma and Cack Newquist, of Selinsgrove, Pa.; and six precious grandchildren.

An opportunity to express your condolences to the family along with signing the memorial guest register is available online at fehrmanmortuary.com.
