According to a study by “a celebrated Berlin physician,” a man who wanted to preserve his strength and health and live a long life ought to marry.   

The doctor compared the death rate for single and married men between the ages of 30 and 45 and found it 27 percent for single men but only 18 percent for married men. At age 60, there were 22 bachelors compared to 48 married men. At age 70, there were 11 bachelors compared to 27 married men. By age 90, there were only three bachelors compared to nine married men.

According to a census conducted by the state of California, Susanville had 5,305 residents living within the city limits. Another 1,500 to 2,000 people lived in company housing and adjacent areas such as the Fruit Growers Supply Company, the Lassen Lumber and Box Company, below Mesa Street, and in the Indian Heights area. The state census figures were used to calculate the city’s share of gasoline taxes.

Lassen Community College was formally dedicated at 12:30 p.m. May 13, with the laying of a cornerstone. Grand Lodge officers from the California Free and Accepted Masons traveled for three days by bus from San Francisco via Eureka and Redding to participate in and attend the ceremony and celebrate the opening of Susanville’s Grand Lodge. Munchies at the fete included barbequed beans, hot dogs and coffee, but those in attendance were advised to bring their own service and supplemental food.

It took a pair of Chester High School sweethearts from the class of 1957 30 years to discover love at first sight. The couple met during the summer of 1955 and dated through high school, but they argued and broke up on graduation night.   

Each one moved to a different town, married a different person and live a different life. Although neither of the couple can remember exactly what they fought about at the graduation dance, they attended their 30-year reunion as newlyweds.

A complaint sent to the California Attorney General alleges District Attorney Bob Burns had a conflict of interest when he refused to prosecute alleged Brown Act violations.   

The Lassen County DA sits on the School Attendance Review Board he refused to investigate, according to the letter of complaint from Holly Faure, a concerned parent.

Seven years ago   

The ongoing debate over the use of fluoride in drinking water is coming to Susanville.   

Dr. Paul Holmes, co-chairman of the Lassen Health Task force and medical director of Northeastern Rural Health Clinics, made a presentation to the Lassen County Board of Supervisors detailing the degree of dental decay in Westwood. Holmes explained to the supervisors there is a “huge epidemic” in Lassen County.

A year ago   

Lassen County Public Health nurses warned residents against panicking in the wake of the increasing number of swine flu cases in the U.S., but also advised caution and preventative steps to avoid possibly coming in contact with the virus.    

Public Health Nurse Sarah North said there are currently 16 confirmed cases of swine flu in the state of California, and 44 possible cases being tested. One case has been confirmed in the state of Nevada.     Of the 16 confirmed cases in California, eight have been hospitalized.
