90 years ago   

The Census Bureau made public the preliminary announcement of the population on Lassen County as returned by the census taken in January. It showed the population had nearly doubled during the decade between 1910 and 1920. According to the figures, Lassen County had 8,507 residents while the city of Susanville had 910.

Susanville Health Officer Dr. J.W. Crever issued a warning the seasonal rise in infantile paralysis (polio) had begun and urged parents to keep their children out of crowds and take other precautions against the dreaded disease. These precautions included avoiding swimming pools, avoided overexertion such as exhausting bike rides, not removing tonsils except in urgent cases and getting rid of flies.

40 years ago   

A human case of bubonic plaque was reported in Plumas County, just over the Lassen County line, just beyond Clear Creek.

30 years ago   

Susanville Finance Director Jim Jeskey announced he was retiring to help manage the Mt. Lassen Hotel. Jeskey worked for the city for 15 years and served on the city council for seven years.   

Lassen National Forest Director William Jones retired after 33 years of federal service. Jones assumed the director’s position in 1977 after working as the deputy supervisor for the Shasta Trinity National Forest.

25 years ago   

A fire lookout tower removed from atop Pegleg Mountain was relocated at the Lassen County Fairgrounds. This tower was completely restored and was intended to help teach the public about the art of spotting forest fires. The exhibit is now known as Pegleg Lookout.

20 years ago   

An inmate at the California Correctional Center was fatally stabbed and five others were wounded during a fight on July 7. Twenty-five inmates engaged in a fight at Dormitory 49 of the Sierra Unit that lasted approximately two minutes.

15 years ago   

A courthouse brawl outside the Lassen Superior Courthouse renewed the security debate for the old facility. The brawl began when a bailiff attempted to serve an arrest warrant.   

Three attorneys, several citizens and six or seven deputies joined in the brawl.    

One of the local attorneys said, “At one point we were all hanging over the balcony. I looked over and noticed it was a long way down.”

Five years ago   

An employee of the Hungry Moose interrupted a burglary in progress on Friday, July 7, giving the Susanville Police Department more suspect information for a string of robberies at businesses in town.   

More than 15,000 members of the Rainbow Family gathered Sunday, July 4 in the South Warner Mountains of Northeastern California in the Modoc National Forest for its annual gathering.

Last year   

Officials at community colleges across California are coming to grips with many changes in education budgets anticipated to be stemming from the state budget crisis, including a potential fee increase for students.    

The proposal, which comes directly from the California Budget Conference Committee in Sacramento, suggests a $6 dollar per unit increase, bringing the per unit charge at Lassen Community College to $26.    

The increase is one of many ways legislative representatives are attempting to close the $24 billion budget deficit.
