According to the Advocate, Susanville can now boast about 30 young women, all fair and sweet, for half as many young men. So the dear creatures are seriously thinking of importing a few more boys!

Sheriff Olin Johnson was called shortly after 2 a.m. to the Pine Cone Inn night club between Fall River Mills and Beiber to assist in apprehending two armed bandits who entered the premises shortly before that hour, stood up the management, employees and patrons and escaped with $400 in cash.   

The men entered the place, it was reported, with drawn revolvers and proclaimed, “This is a stick up.” One of the robbers held a gun on those in the room while the other rifled the cash register.

The Lassen County Board of Supervisors heard from residents living near the Leavitt Lake Home Subdivision during the first week in August. Residents complained of continuous problems related to the subdivision which included a recently dug drainage ditch, seepage from sewage ponds which they believed complicated their water supply, possible drying up of wells and lack of notification of hearings held on the subdivision issue.

The feasibility of forming a public utilities district at the county level was forging ahead but the Lassen County Board of Supervisors emphasized that plans for a district formation would have to include the city of Susanville.   

The move to form the district came to a head when CP National raised the electrical rates for most customers by 28 percent.

20 years ago   

Plans to add a half-cent to county sales taxes to fund local law enforcement agencies moved a step closer to going before the voters. The Lassen County Anti-Crime Authority approved an ordinance that sets up the sales tax. The ordinance now goes before the board of supervisors for addition to the Nov. 6 ballot. The authority hoped to raise nearly $900,000 to put more law enforcement officers on the street.

Ft. Sage School District voters could recall and re-elect the same woman in the upcoming November election.   

That’s because Trustee Rae Lynne Leonard is the subject of a recall on the Nov. 7 general election ballot. If the recall is successful, she’ll only lose one month of her term, which is set to expire Dec. 1. If it’s not, she’ll serve her last month.   

But at the same Nov. 7 election, Leonard’s general term comes up for grabs again. Last week, she said she would refile for that spot on the ballot. That means Leonard could earn her seat again for four more years, no matter what happens in the recall.

Red tags marking the doors and windows of Meadow View School will be removed in plenty of time for school to resume on Tuesday, Aug. 24.   

Susanville School District Superintendent Mark Evans said last week he has heard rumors around town that the natural gas installation and clean up from a major propane leak will not be completed in time but contrary to the talk and questions, school will resume at 8:15 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 24.   

“We will be open in time. Teachers are allowed back into the classrooms and the city of Susanville will have the natural gas lines 95 percent installed by the end of the week (July 30),” said Evans.

Northeastern Rural Health Clinics will close its two satellite clinics in Westwood and Doyle July 31 in order to meet a projected budget shortfall of $788,000.    

According to Chief Executive Officer Al Gugenberger, the state of California is cutting its Healthy Families Program and Expanded Access to Primary Care Program as well as its adult dental program through MediCal. Also a rural health grant worth $250,000 is being eliminated.    

“We can’t sustain those two clinics with that kind of loss in state revenue,” said Gugenberger.    

He added NRHC lost $138,795 at Doyle Family Practice and $109,220 at Westwood Family Practice during the last fiscal year from June 2008 to May 2009. On average the nonprofit provider of outpatient care in Lassen County lost $50 per patient in Doyle and from $53 to $21 per patient in Westwood.
