Lassen High School wrestlers took no chances of being edged off the North Section championships this year when they competed at Paradise High School. The local wrestlers swept to an unprecedented 95 points, almost doubling the score of runner-up Willows High School. In all Lassen High School produced five division champions, one-second place and two third place finishers.

Six studies were in progress for the proposed Biomass 55-megawatt power production plant in Wendel with at least one of them — a forest inventory on the availability of wood and methodology of collecting it — being the center of concern for local residents who have expressed fears that their heating supplies would be diminished.

“This is a science lesson, please notify Jacksonville School in Jacksonville, Ore., where and when found.” This little note was tied to a red ribbon and hung in from a black helium balloon, which floated into the Eagle Lake Marina.
Then Eagle Lake Marina managing operators, Joe and Judy Hiner, were from Medford Ore., five miles from the balloon’s departure location and intended to return the balloon to the class.

Lassen Municipal Utility District and Plumas-Sierra Electric Cooperative bitterly battled over boundaries in Lassen County.
The controversy stemmed from a Dec. 12 LMUD board meeting during which the staff was directed to prepare an application to the Lassen County Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) defining the utility’s sphere of influence as the entire county, a position LMUD eventually backed away from.

Dennis M. Ervine was found guilty of murdering Lassen County Deputy Sheriff Larry Griffith. Ervine was also found guilty of three counts of attempted murder and special allegations that make him eligible for the death penalty.
Griffith, 44, was killed on March 2, 1995, during an exchange of gunfire between Ervine and four deputies who responded to a domestic dispute near Ravendale.
The jury agreed the shooting was an ambush of a peace officer engaged in his duty committed in order to avoid arrest.

The Lassen College Board of Trustees favors annexing the campus into Susanville without turning over the school’s water system to city council.
Great news from up the hill at Lassen Community College — the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges Western Association of Schools and Colleges reaffirmed the college’s accreditation last month.
“I think we should have a party,” said a jubilant Sophia Wages, president of the LCC Board of Trustees. “I think we should be dancing in the streets. I’m excited. I’m just so proud of everybody at the college for working so very hard.”
