Word reached Susanville from Sacramento that the fourth draft call demanding 57 men from among the 2,693 residents in Lassen County report in San Francisco on March 24, just 10 days after 46 others called in the third draft call reported for duty. This brings the total number of Lassen County men called to 130 for the month.

At a special meeting, the Susanville City Council assessed a penalty of $3,400 against a construction company for its failure to complete the city’s new fire hall by Dec. 15, the contract stated the contractor was to be penalized $50 per day for each day the project was late. The council approved the notice of completion of the structure, which noted exceptions, on Feb. 21 — 68 days after the scheduled completion date.

Susanville’s geothermal project was well on track and had accrued a capital reserve, according to a report made to the City Council by a geothermal investigator. The council also made an award for the pipeline portion of the project, and conceptual aspects of the Park of Commerce were discussed.

Sierra Pacific’s Industries large power line project through Lassen County got another big jolt last week in a project that could mean cheaper electrical rates for Lassen Municipal District customers. SPI officials said the Bonneville Power Administration had agreed to supply power to the 345,000-volt line which would double the Nevada firm’s capacity. LMUD officials had expressed an interest in tapping into the line, but they had a long-term contract with PG&E.

Six full-time employees and numerous part-time employees face layoffs at Lassen Community College.
With recent chancellor’s investigations, dramatic declines in student enrollment and funding and the uncertain future of the college, the Tuesday, Feb. 22 Board of Trustees regular meeting was filled with LCC staff waiting to hear just how secure their jobs really are.
The Susanville Sanitary District had a busy week between Jan. 31 and Feb. 7 when four different manholes popped open and overflowed around the city.
The fourth and largest spill happened along a trail near Paiute Meadows near Paiute Creek, spewing roughly 600 gallons of sewage into Paiute Creek.
