Curtis Newly risked his life when the brakes on his logging truck failed to function and he ran into another truck in front of him instead of risking hurting others. His throat was cut and his head was pinned in his cab by a log, but was rescued by several bystanders.

The new Devil’s Corral Bridge was dedicated, replacing the old one, which was so named because early wagoneer’s on their way to the Sacramento Valley following the Susan River were corralled there because they could not traverse the perpendicular rock wall.

The Lassen County Department of Health and Human Services was searching for a new alcohol and drug program, spurred by the closing of the county’s recovery house in July 1985. There was also talk of opening a medical detox facility in Susanville so drug addicts wouldn’t have to travel to Reno to dry out.

The Court of Appeals of the State of California remanded a case back to Lassen County Superior Court Judge Ridgley Lazard because he mistakenly awarded restitution to an insurance company instead of the “direct victims” who suffered the loss.

Two local residents and a patient advocacy group filed a lawsuit against the city of Susanville, charging its ban on medical marijuana illegally restricts the rights of patients and their doctors.

Timothy Ziegler, Robin Rust and Americans for Safe Access (ASA) filed the suit on Oct. 6, ASA also filed suits against Concord and Pasadena.

The suit filed in Lassen County’s Superior Court by local attorney David Williams states, “Plaintiff Timothy Ziegler is a qualified medical marijuana patient who took steps toward forming a medical marijuana collective in accordance with California Health and Safety Code Section 11362.5 and 11362.775…

The city of Susanville’s rigid policy of banning all medical marijuana collectives deprives qualified medical marijuana patients of the medicine promised them by the Compassionate-Use Act … thereby causing them wholly unnecessary suffering and pain.
