Westwood falls in first round
Westwood High School's football team had its season come to an end in the first round of the Northern Section Division VI Playoffs Friday, Nov. 9. Seeded No. 2, the Lumberjacks (8-3) succumbed to No. 3 Maxwell 22-14 at home.
"It was a defensive battle," Westwood head coach Brian Johnson said. "They stopped our running game, beat us at special teams and won the turnover battle. And we just ran out of time at the end."
Cody Poggi and Josh Kinney caught touchdown passes for Westwood.
Johnson said he was "real" pleased with his team's regular season.
"We were out-sized and teams were bigger and stronger than us toward the end of the season," said Johnson, who has led the Lumberjacks to three straight Feather River League titles in four years at the helm. "We really missed Seth (DeLong) and Jason (Judd). Not having them really made a difference."
DeLong and Judd were sidelined with injuries.
Johnson said he was proud of how his players finished the season.
"I knew at the beginning of the year that we would contend for the title, but we had to play some good football at the end of the season to win it. The guys really stepped it up at the end and beat some teams, that on paper, were better than us."
Westwood defeated Fall River and Loyalton in its final two games of the regular season to wrap up outright ownership of the FRL crown.
