In celebration of the Chinese New Year, a local “boss chairman,” On Hi, held a banquet for a number of his white townsmen.

The menu consisted of fish brain and chicken soup, chicken heart and gizzard sandwiches and pork a la mode.

70 years ago

At 2 a.m., Feb. 9, by an act of Congress, it was 3 a.m. “war” time. The move to daylight saving time was principally for conserving electricity in large industrial centers of the nation. Lassen High School responded by beginning classes one hour later.

45 years ago

Parts of Highway 395 were flooded by waters from the Susan River about one-half mile southwest of Seven Acre Garage in Litchfield. The California Department of Highways reported that other areas were flooded but passable. The Susanville Airport reported 1.53 inches of rain in a three-day period.

30 years ago

Blood test evidence from a local man charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter and drunk driving, among other felonies, was suppressed by Judge Joseph Harvey, on the grounds the blood was taken from the man by threats of force.

15 years ago

It looks like Lassen County’s bitter ambulance war is over.

That was the word from Sheriff Ron Jarrell in a report to the Board of Supervisors at the Tuesday, Jan. 28 meeting.

Jarrell told the board that dispatchers are now sending the closest ambulance to the scene of any accident or medical emergency unless a client prefers one of the two Susanville ambulance firms.

Jarrell said Lassen Ambulance owner Brad Reger and Sierra Life Support owner Ryan Potter agreed to the arrangement in a December meeting. Previously, the ambulance firms traded every other call for help unless the client had a preference.

Two natural gas meters broke apart during installation on Ash Street because of high pressure in city gas lines.

“Moisture in the gas caused the regulation station to allow higher that normal gas pressure to get on the city side of the regulation station,” said City Public Works Director Louie Templeton.

The problem developed on Monday, Jan. 28.

The city’s natural gas crew, led by Craig Platt and employees Dale Moore and Ron Johnson, got everyone back in service the same day.

Five years ago

A number of local inmates have been spending their time giving back to Lassen County in a big way.

Participants of the Community Correctional Facility Inmate Work Crew, operated by the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office, put in a total of 13,845 work hours on various community projects in 2005.

Jail Commander, John Mineau said the work, which includes a wide range of community projects from weed abatement for fire prevention to groundskeeping and cleanup on the Bizz Johnson Trail, translates to more than $93,000 in work given back to the community when calculating hours at minimum wage.

Last year

Police arrested a Susanville man after receiving a call from his wife saying her husband was allegedly chasing her down the street and threatening to kill her.

Police reports said the woman was out of breath and she was having trouble speaking during the 6:35 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31 call to dispatch. She also allegedly told the police her husband was extremely drunk.

The man allegedly chased his wife from their Monte Vista home on Paiute Lane in front of Meadow View School. She then said she was able to make it into a house on the corner of Ruth Way and Paiute Lane.
