Evelyn Nancy Good
Leland Edward Wood
Leland Edward Wood, Jr. passed away at his home on the Wood Ranch at Horse Lake unexpectedly on May 11, 2012. He had been irrigating that morning and was getting ready to go to his granddaughter’s wedding.
Ed was born Nov. 19, 1935 in Susanville, Calif. to Leland “Butch” and Verna Maude Wood. He had twin sisters, Joan and Jane. He spent his early years in town, but moved out to the Horse Lake Ranch with his family part time in 1949 and full time in 1952. He loved the ranch.
Ed graduated in Lassen Union High School in 1953. Soon after, he married his high school sweetheart, Marlene May Hoffman and they made the Horse Lake Ranch their permanent home. They raised three children there; Darrell, Dennis and Diana.
A lifelong member of the Cattlemen’s Association, he served as Lassen County Cattlemen’s President. Ed was a 54-year member of the Susanville Elks Lodge and a longtime Farm Bureau member.
His ranch was his life. There, family, good friends and neighbors who loved to visit and share good times surrounded him. People came to Horse Lake whether it be to a branding, to deer camp or just to sit on the deck with Ed and swap stories.
Marlen, his wife and constant companion of 56 years preceded him in death by 11 months. Also preceding him were his parents and his two sisters.
Ed is survived by his children, Darrell (Callie), Dennis (Jo Ellen) and Diana (Keith); seven grandchildren, Ramsey Wood, Dallice Wood Nuttall (Logan), Trevor Wood, Danielle Wood, Ryan Wemple, Reg Wemple and Kattie Wemple, along with brother-in-law, Ray Dieter.
A celebration of life will be held for Ed at the place he loved the most, the Wood Ranch at Horse Lake at 11 a.m. June 17. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lassen County CattleWomen’s Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 1469, Susanville, CA 96130 or the California Rangeland Trust, 1221 H St., Sacramento, CA 95814.
