Student shot at Lassen Community College

July 12, 2012 — A Lassen Community College student was accidentally shot by a fellow student in the gunsmithing classroom Tuesday, July 10.

LCC President Marlon Hall confirmed the shooting, but declined to identify any of the people involved.

“On July 10, a student was accidentally shot by a classmate in the gunsmithing class,” Hall said. “He was rushed to Banner Lassen Medical Center. From Banner Lassen he was taken to Renown Medical Center in Reno.”

Hall said two college instructors visited the victim Wednesday in Reno and he was back in class Wednesday evening.

“There was no nerve damage or organ damage,” Hall said.

A spokesperson for the Susanville Police Department said the department had not issued a press release on the incident, and the spokesperson could not comment for this story.

The spokesperson then referred the newspaper to the college for information on the shooting.

A witness from Reno, who asked not to be identified because her son will be attending the college in the fall, alerted the newspaper to the story when she called seeking additional information.

She said her son was registering for classes when they heard “a loud boom.” A moment later several students came running out of the gunsmithing room. She said it appeared the victim had been shot in the back, and she feared he might bleed to death because it took about 25 minutes for medical personnel to respond.

She also said the shooter “dropped like he had a heart attack,” and another witness to the shooting fainted.

Seriously 25 minutes for medical personnel to respond? The hospital is next door to the college, they could have carried him there faster. When they called for help, they should have said the person shot was an inmate. I bet the medical personnel would have been there in less than 2 minutes.
