She said, “We just thought it would be funny to raise my body weight and height and obviously, that was far exceeded.”
When Anderson delivered five 58-quart bins full of pop top tabs to the Ronald McDonald House Charities in Sacramento, she said “everyone was bug-eyed.”
More donations are on the way as other Northern California communities have yet to turn in their donations.
Ronald McDonald HouseCharities across the United States use the pop top tabs as a recycling fundraiser to raise money for children and their families. The nonprofit organization provides families a home away from home at little or no cost when their seriously ill or injured children go through treatment.
Aside from Anderson’s efforts, the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northern California receives about $18,000 from pop top tab fundraisers.
“So that will definitely be a boost to that,” Anderson said of her recent delivery.
When she ran for Miss California State in 2011, Anderson had to choose an advocacy project and present it before a panel of judges.
Her passion for Ronald McDonald House Charities stems from volunteering at Camp Ronald McDonald at Eagle Lake, and she said it has had a large impact on her life.
After winning the top crown, Anderson traveled to other communities and shared about her advocacy project.
She said it is one thing to have the judges support it, but it’s another to have the state support it and get behind it.
People can still drop off pop top tabs at the Lassen County Chamber of Commerce, the Ronald McDonald House Charities in Sacramento located at 2555 49th St.or at the facility in Reno. People may also contact Anderson via Facebook if they have pop top tabs they want to donate.
Anderson is a2010 graduate of Lassen High School. She won Miss Lassen County in 2009 and then Golden State Youth Ambassadress in 2010. Inspired by the message of the California State Youth Accolades Scholarship, she ran for the state title again and won the following year.
After spending two years at the University of California, Davis, Anderson transferred to the University of Nevada Reno, where she is studying biology with an emphasis in pre-med.
She is focusing solely on school now, buther efforts to support Ronald McDonald House Charities will continue because she said individuals in other scholarship programs and organizations are taking on the pop top collection fundraiser.
She expressed her deepest gratitude to the organizations instrumental in the pop top tab collection this past year.
