Oct. 16, 2012 — Lassen County’s Board of Supervisors continues to make good on its promise to find a way to build a swimming pool for the people of Susanville and Lassen County.
At its Tuesday, Oct. 9 meeting, the board unanimously approved a resolution establishing the Lassen County Swimming Pool Committee. The committee will make recommendations to the board of supervisors regarding all aspects of the pool project, including the site, design, governance, operating costs, construction financing and the cost of a possible ballot measure.
Martin Nichols, Lassen County Administrative Officer, will chair the committee and represent the county. Other committee members will include representatives from the Lassen High School District, the Susanville Elementary School District, Lassen County Office of Education, the city of Susanville, the Lassen Municipal Utility District, Lassen Community College, the Lassen County Chamber of Commerce and the Lassen Economic Development Commission.
Different groups and agencies have different ideas about nearly every aspect of the pool project from potential sites to designs to funding to how to handle the operational and maintenance costs once the facility is built, and the committee is charged with sorting through all the details and making a recommendation to the board on how to proceed by January.
Hopefully the committee can reach a consensus on the best way for the county to proceed with the pool project that can satisfy all the parties and interests involved and build a pool that will serve the needs of the community for decades to come.
One thing is clear — no single entity or group has the resources or ability to complete this pool project on its own. It’s going to take a collaborative effort by all the interested parties to get it done.
We commend the spirit of cooperation and dedication shown by everyone involved, and we anxiously await the committee’s recommendation.
The pool project is a prefect opportunity to display the community’s ability to get things done when everyone works together for a common purpose.
