Driver collides with power pole on Richmond Road

Nov. 5, 2012 — A driver, who was allegedly under the influence of a controlled substance and texting, crashed his vehicle into a power pole on Richmond Road early in the morning of Saturday, Nov. 3

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), after the incident, Shane Alcorn, 37, allegedly left the scene. He was later located, transported to the hospital for treatment and then booked into the Lassen County Jail.

The accident occurred at approximately 1:45 a.m. when Alcorn was driving east on the road at approximately 40 miles per hour. He allowed his 2001 Jetta to leave the main roadway and collided with the power pole.

The pole was sheared off at the base and came to rest on top of the car.

According to the CHP, there were live power lines hanging approximately six feet above the ground and in the road.

Due to the live power lines, rescue personnel were unable to access the vehicle for approximately 45 minutes. After the Lassen Municipal Utility District responded and secured the power lines, emergency crews were able to search the area and confirm there were no other occupants in the Jetta.

Richmond Road was opened to one-way traffic control after approximately 2-1/2 hours. After replacing the pole, traffic was opened at approximately 9 a.m.

The power poles had nothing to do with this. The man was under the influince and texting. He was 37 years old and old enough to realize he acting a fool. End of story.
