Strong cold front to bring snow on Christmas Eve

8:52 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2014 — A Winter Weather Advisory for snow remains in effect from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today Wednesday, Dec. 24.

Snow and lower elevation rain will develop around midday today, continuing into this evening.

Snow accumulations are expected from 1 to 4 inches at elevations lower than 5,000 feet, and 4 to 8 inches higher than 5,000 feet — mainly west of Highway 395.

Snow levels should be about 5,500 feet early this afternoon, falling to all valley floors by late afternoon.

Wind gusts expected up to 55 miles per hour on Highway 395 south of Susanville decreasing by late this afternoon.

Rapidly deteriorating road and visibility conditions by mid-to late-afternoon today. Gusty winds combined with the snow could reduce visibility below 1 mile. Travel restrictions with chain or snow tire requirements are expected for many area roads on Christmas Eve.

Snow will pose an inconvenience to travelers. Roads will become slick and hazardous with snow and ice first developing on bridges and overpasses. Motorists should slow down and use caution.
