High School hosts invitational basketball tournament

Dec. 12, 2012 — Lassen High School’s (LHS) boys basketball team hosts a big, big basketball tournament later this week.

According to varsity head coach Kevin Jones, this is the first invitational tournament the school has hosted in nearly 30 years — its last invitational tournament was held in 1982 or 1983.

Jones said the tournament features LHS varsity and junior varsity squads as well as teams from five out-of-the-area schools, including St. George Secondary School, a prep school from north of the international border from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Jones said the team from St. George is “very competitive” and includes two players expected to be recruited and play at the division 1 level in college.

The other teams include UPrep, from Redding; Oroville High School; Upper Lake High School, from Lake County; and Liberty Christian School, from Redding.

All six schools will put varsity teams on the court, but St. George and Liberty Christian will not participate in the junior varsity contests.

The Thursday, Dec. 13 match-ups at Lassen High School feature a junior varsity contest and two varsity games. The Grizzlies play at 5:30 p.m.

On Friday, Dec. 14, junior varsity games will be played at LHS and varsity games will be played at Lassen Community College (LCC). The Lassen JVs take on the UPrep at 5 p.m. at LHS, and the Grizzlies face Oroville at 7 p.m. at LCC.

Seven games will be played at LHS Saturday, Dec. 15. The Lassen JVs face off against Upper Lake at 9 a.m. and against Oroville at 4:30 p.m. The Grizzlies play Upper Lake at 12 noon.

Approximately 140 players will enjoy a spaghetti dinner at LCC Friday night and the Marine Corps League will serve breakfast to the players Saturday morning at the Veterans Memorial Hall on Main Street in Susanville.

“The Lassen Invitational Tournament was a yearly occurrence and a big annual event,” Jones said. “This is the first year we’re bringing it back, and I’m sure we’ll hit some bumps in the road, but we plan to bring it back even stronger next year.”

Jones said the basketball team still accepts donations to help feed the players. To make a donation, contact Jill Atkinson at jatkinson@lassennews.com or Kevin.Jones@lassenhigh.org.

Jones said the team appreciates all the support it has received from the community.
