Winter storm watch in effect Thursday through Sunday
Dec. 19, 2012 — A winter storm watch is now in effect from late Thursday night, Dec. 20 through Sunday evening, Dec. 23.
There will be periods of moderate to heavy snow and the best chance for heavy snow will be during the day Saturday and Sunday.
Several feet of snow accumulation is expected west of Highway 395 with up to one foot east of Highway 395 above 4,500 feet. A mix of rain and snow is expected below 4,500 feet; with little accumulation Friday and Saturday, several inches possible Saturday night into Sunday.
Winds will be coming from the south 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.
Periods of heavy snow and strong winds could lead to whiteout conditions and lengthy travel delays. Travelers may want to consider a secondary route to avoid mountain passes this weekend. Back country activities are not advised.
