LaRayne Eva Anderson

     LaRayne Eva Anderson passed away peacefully Jan. 1, 2013 at the age of 82.

     She is predeceased in death by her mother, Inez Olive Oakes, and father, George Harold Oakes; brother, James Harold Oakes; and her first husband, Kenneth Robert Kingston.

     LaRayne is survived by Reverend Stuart Norman Anderson, loving husband of 53 years. They were married in San Jose, Calif. in 1959. LaRayne is lovingly remembered by her husband and children: sons, Kenneth Anderson and Ron Anderson, and daughters, Sharon Frost, Christina Baker and Marcia Yallech; as well as her grandchildren, Cody, Claire, Megan, Jack, Calvin, Nicholas and Anna. LaRayne is also remembered by her brother, Thomas Oakes, and sisters, Kathleen Boreen and Ethel Sellin.

     LaRayne was born in Hunter, N.D., on April 6, 1930. She graduated from Moorehead High School in 1947 and went to Moorhead State Teachers College then graduated with her nursing diploma from Sisters of St. Joseph in Fargo, N.D. in 1951. She was a nurse at St. Johns Hospital in Fargo until moving to San Jose in 1952. She married Kenneth Robert Kingston in 1953. He passed away in 1958. She was remarried to Reverend Stuart Anderson in 1959.

     LaRayne worked for more than 50 years as a nurse in hospitals, nursing homes and, her favorite, as a school nurse in San Jose, Sacramento, Calif. and Susanville, Calif. She enjoyed and dedicated her time to children’s ministries. She and Stuart retired to Petaluma, Calif. in 2000. She was an amazing woman, wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and nurse. She always put others first, especially her family and children who needed her care. LaRayne’s indelible legacy to all who knew her is her smile, deep faith and positive outlook on life.

     There was a celebration of her life and a Christian service held at the Lucchesi Community Center, 320 North McDowell Blvd., Petaluma at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, followed by a reception.

     In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in her name may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Organization at jdrf.org; or the Alzheimer’s Research Foundation at alzfdn.org.

 

 

Danna Mae Foley

     Donna Mae Foley died Jan. 13, 2013. She was born in Mayfield, Kansas on Aug. 16, 1933.

     Donna was preceded in death by her husband, Timothy, her parents, Frank and Thelma Simpson; and brother, Dean.

     Donna is survived by her sister, Norma; four sons, Tim, Frank, Albert and Mike; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

     Services are pending.

Carolyn Gibbs

     Carolyn Gibbs lived a wonderful life from Feb. 5, 1946 to Jan. 11, 2013. She was taken after a long battle with cancer and died in her home. This brings great sadness to her family and friends but opens an opportunity to celebrate her life filled with accomplishment. Carolyn lived in Susanville for 32 years and retired from the Bureau of Land Management where she worked as a botanist for 16 years. She graduated from Lassen Community College and then received a bachelors of arts degree in plant biology from the University of California at Davis while raising a family.

     Carolyn loved the outdoors and especially the high desert of northeast California. She would frequently go for long hikes with her children or grandchildren and see how many different plants she could identify. She would pick up random items such as rocks and sticks and find joy in the simplest wonders of our outdoor environment. Some of Carolyn’s greatest moments were discovering something new in our world and sharing her discovery with her family and friends. She always had a smile on her face when the sun was shining and she was enjoying our public lands. She would shop for Christmas trees all year long while hiking in our national forests, and was a true environmentalist.

     She loved to read novels and enjoyed the company of her family and friends. She especially loved to play with her grandkids and provided quality guidance to aid them through life.

     Carolyn is survived by her children, Tammy and Joe, Kimberly, Luke, Josh and Jessica; and her 10 grandchildren, Joey, Alex, Zachery, Jeremy, Kelsey, Roman, Brandon, Laylah, Audrey and Lukasz. She is also survived by her longtime friend, Jerry.

Arthur Raymond Hultz

     Arthur Raymond (Ray) Hultz passed away Jan. 12, 2013 in Susanville, Calif. after an unexpected short illness.

     Ray was born in Wakita, Okla. on Jan. 15, 1925. After his enlistment in the Navy, he moved to Napa in 1946 and worked at the Napa State Hospital for 24 years. In 1976, he moved to Susanville and worked in the California Correctional Center as a medical technical assistant until he retired. Ray worked for the state of California for 41 years.

     Ray is survived by his wife, Evelyn (Reed) Hultz, of Susanville; and two children, Bonnie Roman and her husband, Richard, and Danny Ray Hultz and his wife, Angie, all of Susanville. Also surviving are four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

     Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 17 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Susanville. A Rosary was held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16 at Walton’s Colonial Mortuary. Ray was interred at Tulocay Cemetery on Jan. 19, 2013. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested a donation be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Agnes Genevieve Smith

     Agnes Genevieve Smith passed away Jan. 15, 2013 at 99 years of age with her family by her side. Agnes was born Nov. 2, 1913 in Dillon, Mont. Her parents, John and Annie Spehar, emigrated from Eastern Europe in the late 1800s.

     Agnes and Cecil Smith were married Dec. 19, 1936. They had five children, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. They moved to Susanville, Calif. in 1960 where they frequently spent time at their camp lot at Eagle Lake for many years.

     Agnes was a homemaker and a loving and caring wife and mother. She worked at JCPenney for 10 years. She continuously served her community by volunteering at the local library and the Salvation Army. She was also very active in the Catholic Church.

     She was a great and beloved friend, neighbor and family member. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years in 1989. She is survived by her five children, Carol (Dean) Stewart, Cecilia (Ron) Moore, Robert (Marsha) Smith, Dona (Norman) Shepherd and Jack Smith, as well as nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

     A celebration of life and memorial service was held Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013 at Monsignor Moran Hall in Susanville.

Frank W. Tomberlin

Pearl Harbor survivor

     Frank W. Tomberlin passed away Jan. 13, 2013 at Countryvilla Riverview, in Susanville, Calif. His wife Louise was at his side.

     He grew up in the Bay Area. After graduating high school he joined the Navy in 1940. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor on board the Ship Henley at the time of the Pearl Harbor attack.

     After being discharged from the Navy, Frank returned to the Bay Area were he met his wife, Louise Frost. At the time of his death he and Louise and been married 66 years.

     Frank was employed as a union plumber for more than 32 years before retiring. After retirement, Frank and Louise moved to Westwood, Calif. in 1973. Frank worked for Westwood High School, retiring again in 1985. After his second retirement Frank and Louise loved to travel and go on trips in their RV. They fished, camped and more.

     In 1998, Frank and Louise moved to Standish, Calif. and still continued to travel and enjoy themselves. They loved to go fishing, cut firewood, snowmobile and play cards with their many friends. He enjoyed taking rides on mountain roads, not knowing where he was but never getting lost.  He was an avid 49er fan. What he loved most was being with his family and friends. He especially loved his kids and grandchildren. He loved to go to his daughter’s home for Sunday barbeques.

     Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Izabell Tomberlin, and brothers, Lewis and Bob.

     He is survived by his brother, Jack, of Susanville, and sister, Pat Lawson, of Sonoma. He is also survived by three children, Darlene and husband, Ken Capps, of Standish, Tom and wife, Jackie Tomberlin, of Salida, Calif., and Dennis and wife, Betty Tomberlin, of Half Moon Bay, Calif.; grandchildren, Denise and Mike Firbo, Leonard and Denise Tomberlin, Tom Tomberlin, Wesley Tomberlin, Sean Tomberlin and wife, April, and Tara and Craig Capps. Frank was blessed with 20 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

     The family requests in lieu of flowers to please visit a veteran and say, “Thank you” to that person. Everyone will miss you, Dad. We love you.
