CHP officers find missing party near Antelope Lake
March 18, 2013 — Two Quincy Area California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers rescued four people who were reported missing en route from Chico to Susanville earlier this month.
Using a four-wheel-drive SUV, CHP Officers Rob Boyack and Josh Cavolt rescued the overdue party about 5:30 a.m. March 10; several hours after they were supposed to arrive in Susanville.
The car, carrying a woman and three juvenile females, was discovered out of gas and stuck in deep snow in the area of Long Point, about three miles east of the Antelope Lake Dam.
According to the CHP report, the four people were found huddled together, trying to stay warm. The temperature was 17 degrees and vehicle was covered in a heavy layer of frost.
The driver said the vehicle ran out of gas about 9:30 the previous night.
The passengers warmed up in the CHP vehicle and were transferred to Greenville.
The party was reported missing about midnight when the CHP received a call from relatives. The caller said the last contact with the group was a text message about 6:45 p.m. March 9, when the four were near Paradise.
CHP officers from Quincy and Susanville began to check all the possible routes. Sheriff’s deputies from Lassen County also assisted in the search.
At about 3 a.m., the Susanville CHP dispatch received information from Verizon Wireless the overdue party’s last GPS position was in the area of Highway 89 and Crescent Mills about 8:30 p.m.
The CHP determined the party might have attempted to travel Genessee Valley Road as a possible route to Susanville.
That’s when the Quincy CHP responded with SUV, traveling along the rough road covered with snow toward Antelope Lake.
Except for being very cold, none of the occupants was injured.
