Gabe Dortson, of Susanville, caught a 13-pound largemouth bass from the waters of Honey Lake.
According to the local newspaper, Dortson was widely regarded as the most knowledgeable fisherman in the county.
In fact, the paper reported aspiring fishermen would pay him money to spend a day learning the secrets of luring in prize catches.

Fallen trees, caused by the winter’s heavy snows, became a regular occurrence on roads throughout Lassen County.
Motorists in Susanville and Westwood, as well as local and visiting outdoorsmen were unable to reach their destinations because tree trunks and large branches were blocking the roads. One Susanville man was about to open his car door when a massive branch fell and missed him by less than five feet.

A black bear was spotted on three separate occasions roaming the streets of Bieber.
At one time the bear held up traffic in downtown for nearly five minutes while it dragged a garbage bag across the street.

Seventeen men were arrested on various drug charges as sheriff’s deputies and members of the Susanville Police Department served search and arrest warrants throughout the Susanville area.
The raids culminated more than 2-1/2 months of undercover work. Marijuana, cocaine, hallucinogenic mushrooms and other controlled substances were seized.

The Lassen County Board of Supervisors decided to investigate whether the Veterans Memorial Building in Susanville is worth saving or if local veterans would be better served at another location. Supervisor Jim Chapman said he had asked the board to consider the item because the county had put off dealing with the problems associated with the building, like poor heating, for too long.

After narrowly missing an opportunity to arrest a Michigan kidnapper on Tuesday, March 18 in Susanville, the California Highway Patrol and the Lassen County Sheriff’s Department arrested Terry Drake in Standish on Monday, March 24.
Following a tip from Ian Spencer, a Frito-Lay delivery driver who was calling from the Wayside Market in Standish, officers from both law enforcement departments responded and arrested Drake.
Drake, 56, allegedly kidnapped 14-year-old Lindsey Ryan, who was last seen at her home in Jones, Mich., on March 1.

Diamond View School students faced major disruptions after the Susanville Fire Department declared the school’s main building does not meet current standards of public school buildings.
Gary McIntire, superintendent of the Susanville School District and the Board of Trustees discussed the issue at a special meeting.
McIntire said safety is the priority, and even though the school will lose use of those classrooms in the main building, he didn’t think there would be any educational gaps for the students.
