A public meeting was called to organize a local military company. Headed by Frank Cady, the movement would have placed Susanville in line with hundreds of other communities that were engulfed in a nationwide patriotic wave.
These communities wanted to prepare citizens in case the federal or state government called them to duty.

A Lassen County grand jury ordered the eradication of all slot machines and other gambling devices throughout the county. Law enforcement official have had trouble keeping illegal gambling under control.

Communities not protected by a fire entity were the subject of a report submitted to the Board of Supervisors. Before the report was presented, the county planning staff had studied the fire needs of Hallelujah Junction, Milford, Wendel and parts of Herlong. These areas had always been a concern but became more of a worry after the Clark Fire near Milford.

Keeping in mind the risks involved, the Susanville City Council last week approved a conceptual plan and design improvements for a new city park along the Susan River.
Jim Reichle, who teaches a natural resource management course at Lassen High School and was the first to propose the park idea to the city, presented the conceptual plan to the council at its April 5 meeting.

Floral arrangements, gifts and cards from well-wishers festooned the Likely post office recently — all for Patricia Cantrall, the town’s postmaster and Modoc County supervisor; because she was recently named Woman of the Year in Senate District 1, which covers 13 California counties, including Lassen.
In a formal ceremony in the state capitol on March 18, Cantrall was the first to be so honored among 40 recipients of this annual award.
She was personally escorted into senate chambers for the formal presentation by Senator Rico Oller and given special recognition by the senator, who presented a plaque naming Cantrall Woman of the Year.

Steven Lewis Barnett, a former correctional officer, will be held to answer felony charges of attempted murder, assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, spousal abuse, a great bodily injury enhancement and a misdemeanor charge of battery.
Barnett committed the alleged offenses against his wife and his 17-year-old daughter during an incident in the family’s home.

Three local fiddlers won top honors at the California State Fiddling Championships in Oroville the weekend of March 17.
Tallon Sandoval, of Janesville, and Johny McDonald, of Quincy, placed first in the Twin Fiddling division. They also placed second together in the Anything Goes division with fiddle, cello and guitar. McDonald placed first in the Adult division for the seventh time in the past 12 years. Holly Sternberg, of Cromberg, placed second in the Young Adult division, accompanied by Chris Retallack on guitar. Sandoval, 16, also placed fourth in the Junior division.
