Board will consider rate increases for landfills, transfer stations
Monday, June 24, 2013 — On Tuesday, June 25, the directors of the Lassen Regional Solid Waste Management Authority will consider an increase of waste disposal fees at Bass Hill and Westwood landfills and the county transfer stations.
To help meet current and future revenue needs, an increase in disposal fees is proposed to commence July 1, 2013.
Solid waste authority staff are proposing to raise the disposal fee to $69.50 a ton at Bass Hill Landfill and $9 per cubic yard at Westwood Landfill and the other county transfer stations. Current fees are $62.50 per ton and $8 per cubic yard, respectively. The $5 minimum fee is not proposed to be increased.
The proposed increase in waste disposal fees will not affect the C&S Waste Solutions rates for residential and commercial refuse collection services.
Even with an increase in fees, waste disposal in Lassen County will remain inexpensive compared to neighboring counties. At Chester, the disposal fee is $17.69 per cubic yard. In Portola, $19.69 per cubic year. In Alturas, Modoc County recently raised its disposal fee from $10.50 to $24.50 per cubic yard. And at Loyalton Landfill in Sierra County, the fee for construction debris is $13.69 per cubic yard.
Disposal fees are raised infrequently in Lassen County. Since 1999, the disposal fee at Bass Hill Landfill has been raised from $54 to $62.50 per ton, a 15.7 percent increase.
Meanwhile, western states inflation has been 39.9 percent from 1999 to 2012.
A hearing on the proposed increase in waste disposal fees will be held at 3 p.m. on June 25, at the county board of supervisors chambers.
Public input into the rate increase decision process is encouraged. Contact the authority at 252-1273 for further information.
