Forest Service warns of fire danger
June 25, 2013 — With the anticipation of local forests going into early fire restrictions, residents are urged to start doing defensive space clearing around their homes.
The winter storms of the earlier season were not enough to combat the dry February, March and April weather. According to the United States Forest Service (USFS) Predictive Services, the cool rains in May only delayed fire behavior and fire officials do not know what to predict for the coming fire season.
“This is shaping up to be, according to the weather data, our driest in 50 years,” said the Lassen National Forest community liaison Heidi Perry-McCourt at the May 28 Lassen County Board of Supervisors meeting.
With lightening normally happening between the end of June and the first of July, there are preemptive measures that may be taken to reduce the risk of fire.
Clearing defensive space around a home and removing combustible vegetation can slow down an approaching fire.
Calfire suggests clearing brush and dead grass up to 100 feet around any structure. It also stresses dry vegetation should be removed with care during dry, hot weather. Use power tools before 10 a.m., never use lawn mowers on dry grass and remove rocks before using power tools on an area.
Perry-McCourt also warned to cut firewood soon as early fire restrictions will limit woodcutters.
