Police Department allocates new funds
July 9, 2013 — The Susanville Police Department is allocating their newly acquired funds to backfill a narcotics task force agent position.
The new funds were presented in January to the Lassen Chief of Police Tom Downing through the Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC), which assists municipal law enforcement agencies. The program provided $24 million to county police departments across the state and $24,674 came to Lassen County. The funds are dependent on the amount of crime in the area.
“I’ve put together a plan to use those funds to address public safety realignment in our area,” said Downing.
The current status of the state-given funds is set for three years, allowing for the possibility for the funds to not be renewed.
Although there is not enough to hire a new full-time officer or start a new program, according to Downing, it will help bring extra support to the narcotics task force and the department will “use the funds to help detect, investigate, to reduce and to solve crimes.”
Downing plans on using the funds to replace an existing officer’s salary that is currently coming from the department’s general fund. With the money saved through this process, the chief of police hopes to hire a part-time, non-benefited employee.
At the Wednesday, June 19 City Council meeting, councilmember Leno Callegari voiced his concern about forming a position only to have it left unfunded in three years. Downing addressed the issue and claimed the person who holds the position will be told of the unstable situation.
Governor Brown has already budgeted $27 million for the BSCC in the 2013-2014 fiscal year, allowing for potential growth in the funds received.
