Local MMA fighters are training hard for an upcoming fight in Reno

Auttumn Norton works out at Iron Horse Gym to prepare for her upcoming fight. According to coach Rudy Valentine, Norton is one of the hardest workers on the team and is often training in the gym twice a day and on weekends.
Aug. 7 — Two local fighters from Susanville’s Iron Pit Fight Team are training like crazy to prepare for an upcoming MMA fight. Auttumn Norton and Aarason Perry will be competing at the Reno Events Center on Saturday, August 24 at an MMA show that is sure to be a test of skill and determination.
Rudy Valentine, coach of the Iron Pit Fight Team at Iron Horse Gym, is confident in the abilities of the two fighters and is looking forward to watching them show what they’re made of in the ring.
“With these two, I don’t get really nervous … win or lose, I know they’re going to do well,” he said.
Norton has been training and fighting on the team for three years. She has competed in four fights and will be fighting for a title belt at the upcoming event in Reno. Her record is currently 3-1.
Norton was only 18 and still in high school when she went up against a 32-year-old woman in her first fight and won. According to Valentine, her opponent said after the fight that she never thought a girl could hit as hard as Norton did.
“She’s the hardest worker in my club, and it’s cool because she’s one of the most coachable kids I’ve ever had. She works super hard … I’m just really proud of her,” Valentine said.
At a practice session at Iron Horse Gym on Wednesday, July 31, Norton said she feels ready for the upcoming fight and is getting so excited it’s sometimes hard for her to sleep at night.
She doesn’t know very much about her opponent yet, other than the fact that her record is 2-0. “She’ll probably be my toughest fight yet,” Norton said.
She plans to continue training hard during the next few weeks before the fight and eating healthy. According to Valentine, Norton is often in the gym training twice a day and on weekends.
“It’s mostly just about keeping your diet good … you really can’t get away with much. It’s like 70 percent diet and 30 percent gym, and I run every day,” Norton said.
Perry is another fighter who is known for his skill and work ethic at Iron Horse Gym. In the 170-pound weight class, Perry has competed in three fights and is currently undefeated.
“Aarason is an athlete ... he’s in the gym a lot. He works extremely hard. He’s a student of the game, so he knows what he has to do,” Valentine said.
Perry says he’s not nervous about the fight yet, but that he usually begins getting anxious a couple weeks before a fight because he feels like he’s “ready to get in there.” However, Perry does feel a little pressure to keep his winning streak going.
“It’s kind of a big fight because I’ve got to try to keep that perfect record,” he said.
In the days right before the fight, Perry will focus mostly on losing weight, eating healthy and relaxing his body and mind.
“You want to try to go in as fresh and as healthy as possible,” he said.
The Iron Pit Fight Team currently boasts an impressive 350-34 record.
