Westwood man dies in vehicle accident
Monday, Sept. 16 — A passing firefighter from a hotshot crew discovered a single vehicle accident that claimed the life of a 31-year-old Westwood resident, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The Lassen County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Michael Davis.
According to a press release from the CHP, the collision was discovered at approximately 10:15 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 15 and the accident occurred sometime in the evening of Sept. 14 on Highway 36, east of the Susan River Bridge.
The CHP said Davis was driving his 1995 Jeep Cherokee eastbound on Highway 36 in the number two lane at a high rate of speed sometime after 8:40 p.m.
For unknown reasons, Davis allowed his vehicle to drift to the right and side-swipe the metal guardrail. The vehicle swerved sharply back to the left, crossed the entire roadway and hit the guardrail on the westbound side. The vehicle became airborne off the north roadway edge, crashed down the ravine and came to rest on its wheels.
The CHP said Davis was not wearing his seatbelt and was apparently ejected out the rear hatchback of the vehicle.
