Sunday, Oct. 27 — A vegetation fire that started on Silent Oak Lane, off the Janesville Grade, has been contained at a little more than three acres. No structures have been lost or damaged, according to CalFire Battalion Chief and incident commander Lane Caldwell.
Caldwell said adequate resources and patrol will be on scene at least through the night.
The Lassen County Sheriff's Office evacuated residents in the area, but some were already leaving or placing belongings in their vehicles.
Janesville resident Kaikumi Rigney lives near where the fire may have started. She said she smelled smoke inside her house and went outside and saw smoke coming from on top of the hill. She went back inside and informed her husband who told her to grab the children and the dogs and leave. It took her about 10 minutes to collect everyone and then Rigney drove all of them down to a residence at the end of Whispering Pines, the road where Silent Oak connects.
When she left her home, Rigney said she wasn't panicked when she first left, but when she went back to her residence to collect three cats, things were different.
"Twenty minutes later I go back home and half my property is on fire," she said.
According to Rigney, there were flames coming down between her driveway and another house located up the road. The smoke was too bad she was only able to gather two of her cats.
"I couldn't breathe anymore so I just left," she said.
Fire crews were dispatched at approximately 2:35 p.m. and multiple agencies from around the county responded. An airtanker also responded and conducted at least two fire retardant drops.
