Opinion

Don't force me to join something that doesn't represent who I am

March 1, 2011 — The world and national news are two things I try to listen to each evening or at least peruse on the Internet. I find what is happening in other countries and states fascinating, and then I like to form my own opinion. I have learned many times TV pundits have only a few seconds to tell the whole story of the news event, and yes, sometimes opinion skews the facts. Take the situation in Wisconsin with its governor and unions. Governor Walker says he wants to reform collective bargaining rights to fix the budget deficit, and the public-sector unions say the governor is union busting and trying to destroy collective bargaining.

Feb. 22, 2011 — Since I started working at the Lassen County Times in 2005, I have kept every single newspaper, wondering what would be the best way to archive my favorite articles.

About two and a half years ago, I found that solution, but had accumulated approximately 156 newspapers. So, when I found a spare moment or was feeling overly ambitious, I would work on cutting and pasting article after article onto a 12 by 12 piece of paper that was put into a scrapbook.  Finally, I have started to see the light at the end of the tunnel on that project, but it has been fun to look at some of the stories from the past, especially from the early days.

Even 'royalty' should do the time if they did the crime

Feb. 22, 2011 — Today, as I browsed the Political Ticker and entertainment news on CNN my attention was grabbed by the latest survey question: Should Lindsey Lohan go to jail for theft?

According to the reported results as of about 8:36 a.m. 89 percent of survey respondents say “no,” 11 percent “yes.”

While I haven’t read the actual police report, I can only make comment on the so-called facts being reported to date. It has been alleged that she visited a jewelry store in her neighborhood and walked out the door with a necklace valued at $2,500, a cost that raises the criminal stakes to the felony level.

Citizens need to attend Wednesday's public hearing

Feb. 15, 2011 — If there was ever a time to get involved in the business of the Susanville City Council that acts on behalf of the citizens of this community, it is this week.

We encourage everyone to change his or her plans and attend the Wednesday, Feb. 16 public hearing on what could be a fiasco waiting to happen. At 7 p.m. this Wednesday, the council, made up of five elected officials, is soliciting your comments on “the possible temporary borrowing from the restricted Water Capital Improvements Fund in order to refund the Plumas Bank golf course note, or a portion thereof. The council will be considering the use of the other available monies as well.”

I think I need to start skipping Super Bowl commercials

Like 111 million other people I tuned in to watch Super Bowl XLV, the Green Bay Packers versus the Pittsburgh Steelers. It was touted as an old-fashioned gridiron game of two teams of old vying for the top price.

I didn’t go to a Super Bowl party or even watch it with family. My husband was at a job networking conference and my daughter was in another room doing homework. I had the game on because there was nothing else on TV to watch. The house was too quiet, and I was hoping to see some very funny or at least memorable commercials. Well, there were some memorable commercials, but not because they were clever or humorous with maybe two exceptions.
