Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014 — With the refunding of the Secure Rural
Schools and Community Self-Determination Act, the Lassen County
Resource Advisory Committee has been refunded and applicants are
needed to fill a number of vacancies.
The 15-member committee votes on and recommends funding for
projects benefiting national forest resources. Past funding has been
designated for Pine Creek Fish Trap improvements, archaeological
digs, streamside restoration, eradication of and education about
noxious weeds and support of a local tribal youth crew.
The committee is organized into three categories each

Jerry Bird, supervisor with the Lassen National Forest, and
Heidi Perry-McCourt, Lassen National public affairs officer, attended
the Tuesday, Dec. 17 meeting of the Lassen County Board of
Supervisors asking for its help in recruiting members.
Bird said, “We need any assistance you can offer to encourage
members of the county that fall into the various groups under the
categories to assist us.”
Perry said, “If we don’t find people locally they will widen
the pool to people in Northern California and I personally don’t
think that’s in our best interest. According to
Perry, she didn’t see a person from San Francisco benefiting the
local committee, “because they are going to be looking at projects
that are from the county.”
Bird explained the United States secretary of agriculture in
Washington, D.C. makes the appointments and he described it as an
onerous process and not something that goes very quickly.
According to Bird, it is anticipated $150,000 to $160,000 will
be received from Secure Rural Schools Act funding. It will expire in
September 2014 and Bird said not only do they have to know what is
going to be funded, but the money has to be transferred to those
entities or it will have to be given back.
