Sheriff’s office investigates veterinarian's death as a possible homicide

Tuesday, June 24 — According to a press release from the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office, the death of a local veterinarian is being investigated as a possible homicide.

At approximately 8:30 am. Monday, June 23, deputies from the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported death in the Janesville area.

The press release said deputies found a dead man, identified as Richard Meinert, 55, of Janesville, within the business of Thompson Peak Veterinary Clinic.

According to the press release, based on initial assessment, the Bureau of Forensic Services from the California Department of Justice was called in to assist in the processing of the scene.

The press release said although the sheriff’s office is in the preliminary stages of the investigation, evidence exists that leads deputies to believe Meinert’s death may have been the result of a criminal act and possibly in concert with a break-in at the business.

The sheriff’s office is asking for the assistance of the community and encourages anyone with information that could assist with the investigation to call 257-6121.

My heart is broken I lost a good friend. He would do
anything for anyone . He helped so many people and
their furry friends. He will be so missed. I hope that
they find the idiot/idiots that took a very special
man, friend, father, away from us. When he talked
about his children he would just light up
with so much pride. Doc Rich you will always be
with us in our prayers and memories and thoughts.
Lassen County will never be the same.
God bless his family REST IN PEACE MY FRIEND.

Rich was the best Veterinarian I've had the pleasure of having, in my entire life. When Jesse and I saw him a couple of weeks ago..his hugs and smiles made our day!!
His compassion for humans and animals was beyond amazing.
His love for his family, limitless. His sense of humor, at all times dealing with whatever curve ball life threw at him.
His love of God was always at the forefront.

To whomever committed this heinous act of cold blooded murder:
Know that the man you had no mercy for..would have offered you the shirt off his back. You took an Angel amongst us and made him an Angel of Heaven.

You'd better fear the wrath you've created for yourself. You will be found and punished. God help you when you feel the wrath of God.. For he will be your judge.

RIP Rich.. God bless his loved ones.
Always in our hearts!

So terribly sorry to hear this tragic news...I met Rich when he started with Dr. Pyle and I followed him to Janesville as this is where I lived...He took care of all of my cats until I moved to Ireland almost 15 years ago, but I stopped and visited with him on all of my visits "back home"...sending all his family, friends, and patients all my most fervent Irish prayers and Irish blessings...May God bless you, and keep you strong during this most difficult time...
