Local bicyclist killed near Old Station

Tuesday, July 31, 2012 — The Shasta County Coroner’s Office announced this morning Susanville resident Andrew Joseph Hall, 43, a math and science instructor at Lassen Community College, was killed after he was hit by a car on Highway 89 near Old Station, about 7:30 p.m. Saturday, July 28.

According to stories in the Record Searchlight, Hall suffered a neck fracture, blunt force trauma and went into respiratory arrest. Hall was thrown from his recumbent bicycle after being struck by a 2007 Jeep Laredo driven by Pedro Sanchez, 37, of Sparks, Nev. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported Sanchez began to brake because traffic ahead of him was slowing. He veered to the left so he wouldn’t hit the car in front of him then panicked and swerved back to the right when he faced oncoming traffic, hitting Hall in the process.

Heather B. Loy, 42, of Susanville, also was riding a bicycle and was hit by Sanchez, but she wasn't injured seriously, the CHP reported. Her bike got stuck on the front of the car, and she was dragged about 70 feet. She was taken to Mayers Memorial Hospital in Fall River Mills.

The accident investigation continues.

[We are grateful for all your wonderful comments and we hope to visit your college one day - maybe the end of the year or before you finish in 2013. He was there for everyone. We know he made wonderful friends in the USA and over the entire world.
