The newspaper printed an opinion column that preached the importance of distinguishing the two classes of people that make up the country’s population.

It said there were a “first class” and a “second class.” The first was composed of those who were ambitious and were the “salt that keeps the town from spoiling.” The second was the complainers who always have their hand in something that falls.

Twelve Lassen High School and Lassen College boxers went to Reno to compete in the Golden Gloves competition. Some of the boxers were Mervyn Evans, Henri Sanchez, Elmore Clark, Hugh Blosser, Jack Nightingale, Bennie and Filo Rodriguez.

A guilty verdict was issued after the trial of Earl Alexander. The jury convicted him on two counts of felony manslaughter and hit-and-run for the accident in which one youth died and another lapsed into a coma. The incident occurred at the corner of Park and Main streets Oct. 31, 1981.

Inspiration Point will have more police patrols especially during the hours of 11 a.m., to 1 p.m., according to the Susanville City Council. The Council also agreed that a gate will be installed and a small cul-de-sac and parking will be needed for safety purposes.

At one point, the flames were shooting 20 to 30 feet out of the roof of Westwood High School last week, according to Westwood Fire Chief, Eric Ballard. Nevertheless, many Westwood residents did not learn that a large section of the high school suffered the effects of a major fire until the following day. Officials have declared the fire was electrical and started in the ceiling.

Construction continues on the Uptown Cinemas four-screen movie theater at the top of Main Street in Historic Uptown Susanville. The 484-seat movie theater, owned by Sierra Theater’s Mike and Carolyn Smith, is being built in the old J.C. Penney building at 502 Main Street.

Community mental health and law enforcement agencies in Lassen County have made suicide prevention and the awareness of the warning signs a top priority following the untimely deaths of three local mental health clients since March 26. Investigations by the Lassen County Sheriff’s Department, which also serves as the county’s coroner, continue. The immediate cause of death is “pending” according to death certificates in two of the cases.

Five years ago

The Lassen Municipal Utilities District Board of Directors has had its work cut out in trying to keep costs down. Now the California State Assembly Utilities Committee is weighing in on the process and is recommending the approval of Assembly Bill 2021 that could raise consumer bills even higher.

According to an LMUD press release, the bill would extend California jurisdiction over public power systems in the area of energy efficiency.

Last year

A coalition of Sierra conservationists filed an appeal today to overturn approvals of the troubled Dyer Mountain development proposal, according to a press release from Mountain Meadows Conservancy.

“Today’s action is the next step in our long-term commitment to defend Dyer Mountain from the biggest development proposal in the Northern Sierra,” said Steve Robinson of Lassen County-based Mountain Meadows Conservancy.

As the project faces more legal troubles, the clock is also ticking on its mounting tax debt. Dyer Mountain landowners owe Lassen County more than $1.7 million — and counting — in back taxes.
